DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt signaled an
improvement in form in time for next week's French Open (news - web sites)
by beating Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-2, Sunday in the
World Team Cup.
Hewitt dominated Novak from the start to put Australia 1-0 up in the Red
Group tie.
In the other Red Group tie, Carlos Moya (news), the world No. 4, beat
James Blake, 7-6, 7-5, to give Spain a 1-0 lead over the United States.
Argentina, Chile, Germany and Sweden will contest the Blue Group, with the
two group winners going through to Saturday's final.
Hewitt, beaten by Fernando Gonzalez in the Hamburg Masters Series last
week -- his first claycourt event of the year -- looked comfortable Sunday
.
"I feel like I played as well as I needed to today," Hewitt said. "I
stepped it up from last week and I felt pretty good out there."
Novak, who qualified as one of the top eight players in the season-sending
Masters Cup in 2002, has been struggling for form this year and Hewitt
took advantage with a patient display in heavy conditions after overnight
rain.
"It is always going to take a bit of time for me on clay," Hewitt said. "
Not having grown up on the surface, you have to be patient.
Moya was pushed hard by Blake before giving Spain a 1-0 lead over the U.S.
, saving two set points in the first set and then holding on well in the s
econd for his 7-6, 7-5 victory.
"I think we both played well today but I won the most important points," M
oya said. "He (Blake) is a much better player this year ... and it is only
his second claycourt season. But he can play very well on clay and it was
a good win for me."
The Spaniard, French Open champion in 1998 and sure to be one of the favor
ites this year, said Duesseldorf was an important event for him.
"If I don't do well this week, I don't think I will do very well in Paris,
" he said. "It is important for me to play well here and get confidence."
Blake was disappointed not to have taken his chances, especially in the fi
rst set, but was full of praise for his opponent.
"Carlos is obviously one of the best claycourt players in the world and he
never gave me anything on the big points," Blake said.
