LLEYTON Hewitt was last night crowned world champion before beginning
preparations for his Wimbledon defence.
Hewitt and women's world champion Serena Williams were feted at a
black-tie dinner in the heart of Paris as the tennis community
gathered to celebrate its 2002 season luminaries.
Hewitt's fellow Australian David Hall was named world wheelchair
champion for the fourth time.
South Australian Hewitt, who last year became only the fourth man
in history behind John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors to
hold the No. 1 ranking for every week of the season, claimed his
second world championship.
"It was a tough year," Hewitt reflected. "Didn't start off that
great, getting chickenpox at my home grand slam and it was tough
to bounce back.
"I didn't have my sights set on the (year-ending) No. 1 ranking,
I just wanted to win a grand slam."
Hewitt reached the fourth round in Paris last year, won Wimbledon
and advanced to the US Open semi-finals.
He also successfully defended the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.
Williams, bidding for a fifth successive grand slam singles title
at Roland Garros, was a runaway winner of the women's award.
Mark Knowles, of the Bahamas, and Canadian Daniel Nestor won the
men's doubles. Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual and Argentine Paola
Suarez shared the women's doubles award.
