Hewitt Hyped for Wimbledon Defense

LONDON (Reuters) - Lleyton Hewitt will feel an extra pang of pride
when he strides on to Center Court to begin the defense of his Wimbledon
crown Monday.
He does not yet know the identity of his opponent, but is acutely aware
of the sense of occasion and the place it will hold in his heart.
"It is going to be a special moment," the Australian top seed said
Tuesday after being drawn to meet a qualifier in the first round of
the grasscourt grand slam.
"Making that walk last year on the final Sunday was something I always
dreamed about ... and this is what comes with it."
Hewitt was referring to the Wimbledon tradition of the men's champion
opening Center Court play the following year.
It is a path trodden by many great Australians throughout the history
of the sport, from Lew Hoad to Rod Laver.
"I guess in years down the track it will certainly be something to hold
on to," he smiled.
"For me, to be part of that tradition is fantastic. It is a great
feeling ... a great buzz for any competitor to walk in here.
"If there is anywhere I would want to walk into as defending champion
it is here.
GREAT CHAMPIONS
"We (Australia) have got some great champions here. It is the one
reason I wanted to win this so badly."
Having won the title once, Hewitt is keen to dispense with the formalities
and get on with defending his crown.
"There is no doubt that come Monday, that is when you are going to be
feeling the nerves the most," he said.
ut then again, you get pretty eager for Monday. You get sick of talking
about it and want to get on and into the tournament."
Hard practice since leaving Queen's last week without the trophy he had
won the previous three years has sharpened his shots and quickened his
step.
"I felt I wasn't hitting the ball as I'd have liked at Queen's,"
he said of his Stella Artois Championships campaign.
ut in practice I have been hitting pretty well. A lot depends on how
you go out there and perform.
"I have been working on my serve and my return the past couple of days.
For me it is getting used to the grass.
"I feel at the moment I am where I want to be.
"I just want to keep it going."
