Hewitt Brings Australia Level
Lleyton Hewitt has brought the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie between
Australia and Sweden in Adelaide back on level terms. Hewitt took a few games
to work out Davis Cup rookie Robin Soderling but once he got into a rhythm the
Australian was all over the Swede, winning 64 63 61 and brining the tie level
at 1-1 at the close of day one.
The victory also allowed Hewitt to tie the record for the most Davis Cup
singles wins by an Australian. This was Hewitt's 24th victory and he equalled
the record held for more than half a century by the late Adrian Quist.
"It's great. You don't think about that at the start of your career because
you just want to play Davis Cup for Australia," said Hewitt. "It feels like
just yesterday that I played my first Davis Cup match against Todd Martin in
Boston. It feels like it has gone so quick, that I've played in four finals,
lost two and won two.
"There's a lot of great players who have never been able to play a Davis Cup
final, let alone win a Davis Cup final. I've been fortunate enough to play in
a lot of big matches for Australia. Hopefully there's going to be many more,
and everyone knows my thinking on Davis Cup and how much I put into it. This
is a great reward I guess, for all the sacrifices that I have made for Davis
Cup over the years."
Hewitt said it was important for him to get the first set under his belt against
Soderling. He figured that once that happened, the chances would open up even
more. The conditions on court were oppressive with the air temperature passing
the 35 degree mark and by winning the opening set Hewitt was able to swing the
pressure on to the teenager.
"I was trying to work out his game at the beginning and I knew what I would get
out of it. I wanted to make him work in his service games and that was a
telling factor," said Hewitt. "I wasn't going to give him a sniff like
Rainer) Schuettler did at the Australian Open."
Earlier Thomas Enqvist had given Sweden the first point of the tie when he beat
Mark Philippoussis 63 64 62.
It was the first time in two years that Australia had been in the negative on
the first day of a Davis Cup tie. Two years ago Argentina held a 2-0 lead over
Australia at the close of the day one.
"A lot of people, not us, expected us to win comfortably," said Australian
captain John Fitzgerald. "It's always difficult to beat a team of Sweden's
quality even though you hope to be able to sneak through."
Fitzgerald's task now is to work on Philippoussis' mental game. He was very
dejected after the loss to Enqvist but Fitzgerald hopes that a turnaround
similar to the final in late November will happen. Philippoussis lost to
Carlos Moya on the first day and then beat Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the
Davis Cup for Australia.
"All pros take losses hard," said Fitzgerald. "This is what they do best and
they take losses hard but he'll be right. He'll make it a positive and get
through. The team binds together. That's why we have done so well."
