Hewitt Wins Second Straight Title
Lleyton Hewitt sounded a warning to US Open favorites Andy Roddick and
Roger Federer Sunday when he claimed his second consecutive ATP title
at the TD Waterhouse Cup. Hewitt, who clinched the Washington title
last week, improved his winning streak to 10 matches when he blitzed
Peru's Luis Horna 6-3, 6-1 in Long Island.
Hewitt, the 2001 US Open champion, has won 15 of his past 16 matches,
with his only loss during that stretch coming against Andre Agassi in
the final of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati.
The US Open begins Monday in New York.
This year Hewitt has won four titles in five finals. His wins this year
have come in Sydney (d. Moya), Rotterdam (d. Ferrero), Washington, D.C.
(d. Muller) and Long Island. His only loss in a final came in Cincinnati
to Agassi. All-time, Hewitt is 23-8 in ATP finals.
Hewitt’s 23 career titles put him second among active players behind
Agassi, who holds 59.
The 23-year-old Horna reached his first career final after winning his
career high 26th match of the year in Saturday’s semifinal against
two-time defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Hewitt: "I played well. I knew it would be a tough match. He has beaten
some worthy opponents.
“I try not to get too worried about things on court. I didn't
want anything to cause me to lose focus on what I was out there
to do today.
“I opted to stay here (rather than go to the Olympics) to prepare
for the Open. Same balls, same courts, same atmosphere. I want to
be as prepared as possible for the final Slam.
“I heard it was a relaxed tournament out here. It has been good
to get out of the city and not just go to Flushing Meadows to
focus on the Open. And, it was a good result.”
Horna: "I wasn't nervous, but I was very tired. I couldn't find a rhythm
and the movement I wanted to today.
"The first few games were tough. I realized to win a point would
be very difficult. It's been a good week. Everything has been
amazing. I can't think of any better prep for the Open."
