Hewitt has not played since losing the Australian Open final to Russian Marat Safin on January 30 and yesterday admitted he was "trying to get the motivation and adrenalin back in the body". The former world champion packed 15 matches into the first three tournaments of the season, including two five-setters and four four-set contests at Melbourne Park, despite nursing a torn hip flexor. The South Australian took three weeks off to rest immediately after losing the centenary final. "It probably took the most out of me than it ever has," Hewitt said. "Not just the Australian Open, but that whole four weeks of the Australian summer. "I needed a break more than anything, whether I made the final or not. "I was playing a lot of four- and five-set matches. I was trying to recover at the time. At the moment I'm trying to get the motivation and adrenalin back in the body. "It's amazing during the tournament you've got that much adrenalin going through your body and straight after you hit a wall. I'm just trying to bounce back." Hewitt did not pick up a racquet until 10 days ago. His form over the past two days has been startling, impressing Australian captain John Fitzgerald and coach Wally Masur. Boasting an Australian Cup singles record of 25-5, Hewitt admitted the hip injury impacted on his entire Australian Open bid. "I did it in the Sydney semi-finals," he said. "I never hit on days off. It was just recovery, trying to get my body in shape and then when I played I was just trying to get the body through that match." Hewitt said the problem was at its worst in his epic clash with Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Asked yesterday if he envisaged difficulties surviving three best-of-five set singles and doubles matches on grass this week, Hewitt replied: "No, I think it shouldn't be a problem. I lasted the Australian Open. "We'll wait and see (on doubles). It probably depends on how it all pans out on Friday. "If Fitzy and Wally choose to play me in doubles, I'll put my hand up. I should be able to handle a one-off doubles match and two singles. I've played enough pressure ties to know what to expect." Hewitt scheduled a decent break regardless of how the Australian Open panned out. The decision cost him the chance to defend the Rotterdam title, allowing American Andy Roddick to close menacingly in the battle for the No. 2 spot behind Roger Federer. Hewitt will resume in tournament play next week at Indian Wells. World No. 3 Australia is expected to account comfortably for the 13th-seeded Europeans but home captain John Fitzgerald still expects a tough weekend.
