LLEYTON Hewitt is on target to return to the practice court in November after
last month's successful surgery on his left hip, and remains confident of
completing a full Australian summer schedule, starting with January's Hopman
Cup.
Currently away on holiday with his pregnant wife, Bec, Hewitt is yet to
resume running, while following a conservative rehabilitation program
prescribed by Melbourne-based physiotherapist Ivan Gutierrez.
"He's doing a bit of swimming, and things like that, and we're pretty happy
with the way it's going along," Hewitt's manager, David Drysdale, said
yesterday. "We would hope that he starts running again in a few weeks' time
and we'd like to think he'd get at least a month's solid training in prior to
the summer circuit."
Hewitt has not played since the Beijing Olympics, having been forced to
withdraw from the US Open and this week's Davis Cup tie to submit to a hip
arthroscopy and repair of a hip labral tear. It is now Hewitt's ranking that
is suffering most acutely, having slipped to 59th.
While the Australian is scheduled to partner Casey Dellacqua at the Hopman
Cup, the annual mixed teams event has been forced to release world No. 3
Novak Djokovic from his commitment after failing to secure either Ana
Ivanovic (Brisbane International) or Jelena Jankovic (Hong Kong exhibition)
as his Serbian playing partner.
Djokovic, the reigning Australian Open champion, will instead be the
inaugural top seed in Brisbane, where beaten Melbourne Park finalist
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was yesterday announced as another major drawcard at the
new Brisbane event.
"We really wanted these two," said tournament director Steve Ayles. "They
ignite crowds all over the world. As well as being supremely gifted, they
play the game with athleticism, flair and personality."
Hopman Cup tournament director Paul McNamee was philosophical about the loss
of Djokovic. "I couldn't secure his partner, so I had to be very nice and
release him," he said. "It's just one of those things."

■Talented teenagers Bernard Tomic and Brydan Klein could still make their
Australian Davis Cup debuts against Chile this week.
Team captain John Fitzgerald was repeatedly asked by Chilean media who he
would field in the world-group play-off tie in Antofagasta but refused to
rule out any of his seven-player squad. "We haven't decided yet," he said.
"We are still having a look at a few things and will announce our team on the
morning of the draw."
The Australians have been training twice a day since arriving late last week.
They have named Chris Guccione, Peter Luczak, Carsten Ball and Sam Groth but
are allowed to change two of those before the draw.
Klein, Tomic and Robert Smeets have all practised with serious intent. The
15-year-old Tomic is enjoying his second Davis Cup squad experience and
hasn't given up hope of a late call-up. "I'll try my best (at practice) and
leave it up to Fitzy and Darren (Cahill) to decide who goes in because in the
end it's (about) what's best for the team," he said.
The temporary facility, built next to a beach, will hold up to 10,000 fans
and Tomic said the court was better than expected. With AAP
