LLEYTON Hewitt last night returned to the practice court for the first
time since his crushing first-round Wimbledon disappointment.
The world No. 2 began preparations for the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los
Angeles on July 28 under new coach Roger Rasheed on the All-England
Club's indoor hardcourt.
The dual Grand Slam champion is aiming to peak at the US Open in New
York late next month as he bids to continue his major-a-year strike rate
a target which proved beyond even the greatest players.
Hewitt, 22, has rested since his stunning opening-round loss to Croat
Ivo Karlovic and has revisited the tournament only to support his
girlfriend and second seed Kim Clijsters as the Belgian chases her
first major singles title.
Hewitt will contest two Masters Series events following the Los Angeles
tournament.
The South Australian appeared relaxed and in decent form as he worked
with Rasheed, having spent time in Ireland at the Special Olympics World
Summer Games in Dublin.
The world champion oversaw a tennis clinic as part of his role as an
ambassador for the Special Olympics.
"Supporting Special Olympics is a way for me to work with young people
in something I enjoy as well," Hewitt said. "I love sports and I want to
give something back to the game. If my name can help raise awareness for
Special Olympics, that would be fantastic."
Hewitt has lent his support to the program in the hope of doubling the
number of Special Olympic athletes to two million by 2005.
Hewitt is next week expected to drop to possibly No. 5 in the world
rankings his lowest mark since the end of the 2000 season when he was
ranked seventh.
Hewitt has won 27 of 35 matches this season with two title victories on
hardcourt at Scottsdale and Indian Wells.
