Hewitt drops to No.5
Australia's Lleyton Hewitt has dived from the world No.1 in men's
tennis to No.5 in a matter of three weeks and two costly losses.
And the freefall could continue for the 22-year-old.
Roger Federer's win in the quarter finals at Wimbledon leapfrogged
the Swiss from five to four, where defending champion Hewitt had
slipped after losing in the first round last Monday.
If current No.6 Andy Roddick, who reached the semi finals, goes on
to win the tournament, he would also move up, pushing Hewitt back
even further when the new rankings list comes out next week.
On the other hand, Hewitt's Davis Cup teammate Mark Philippoussis
will go from 48 into the high 30's after winning Thursday's quarter
final and could jump into the 20's if he goes further.
Hewitt was replaced as world No.1 by Andre Agassi and went to No.2
when he lost in the quarter finals at the Queen's Club three weeks
ago.
He entered Wimbledon No.2 but when he became the first defending
champion since 1967 to lose in the opening round, he lost 1,000
points in the ATP entry system and slumped to No.4.
He could end the tournament as low as six.
