Scud, Hewitt need 'better coaches' By Paul Mulvey in London 07jul03 FORMER Australian Davis Cup player John Alexander has urged Mark Philippoussis and Lleyton Hewitt to get new coaches for the sake of their careers. Both players entered Wimbledon under a cloud having recently parted with long-term and well-credentialled coaches. Philippoussis's decision to sack Peter McNamara in March and replace him with his father Nick seemed to be vindicated, however, when he reached today's Wimbledon final. But there were still critics, Alexander included, who believed he would be better off with another coach. Hewitt, on the other hand, suffered significantly from his parting with Jason Stoltenberg after the French Open last month. He installed his fitness trainer Roger Rasheed as coach and promptly became the second defending champion in Wimbledon history to lose in the opening round, slumping from No.1 in the world to No.5 in three weeks. "They both need to form a good relationship, a professional relationship with a worthwhile coach," said Alexander, now a respected commentator. "I think it is an essential component to their careers, to the development of their games." Alexander recognised Nick Philippoussis was vital to his son's career but believed the world No.20 needed a coach who was not so personally attached. "Nick is an essential component to the team. The person that works with them has to get on with Nick and with Mark," Alexander said. "Nick made extraordinary sacrifices when Mark was very young. As well as his day job he drove taxis to pay for Mark's tennis. "They've got a very strong bond, more than a regular father-son bond, it's an extraordinary bond of sacrifice. "But you've got to have a separation ... you've got to have someone who comes in and makes decisions on a professional basis on what Mark needs to be doing in consultation with both Mark and Nick." Hewitt's family also plays a major part in his career but following the 22-year-old's shock first round loss to Croatian Ivo Karlovic two weeks ago, the role was questioned. Several former champions called on Hewitt to loosen the reins of his parents Glynn and Cherilyn who travel with him to every major tournament while others doubted the coaching credentials of Rasheed, a former satellite player from Adelaide. "The coach must work with Glynn, who is so involved with his son's career," Alexander said. "Maybe Roger Rasheed is the right person and will replace Jason but he was principally working as his physical trainer. "People who have had some experience at the highest level will bring something to Lleyton's game." Adding to the mix was the involvement of Australia's Davis Cup coach Wally Masur and captain John Fitzgerald who worked closely with both players in the lead-up to Wimbledon and during the tournament. "It's our job to support all of our players, Mark's certainly one of those and if anyone needs a little help we're there for them," Fitzgerald said."I don't know what the future holds for Mark. His dad knows him better than anyone else but Wally and I are there if he needs any help." -- ╔════════════徵人啟示════════════╗ 誠徵教練一枚★ ★條件:強大的求勝意志及豐富的網壇生存經驗 ★  ★ ★其他:冠軍經驗者澳洲人士為佳 請洽小希辦公室:334-5678 ║ ╚════════════★════════════╝ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.217.181.155
