Hewitt, Scud to sharpen doubles

LLEYTON HEWITT and Mark Philippoussis will resume their doubles
partnership for two tournaments in the next month with a view to
the Davis Cup semi-final against Switzerland in September.
Captain John Fitzgerald said his two top singles players would
link at the Mercedes Benz Cup in Los Angeles starting on July 28
and again at the Cincinnati Masters on August 11. The pair played
doubles at two US tournaments earlier this year - Scottsdale and
Miami - to give the Davis Cup team greater flexibility.
Fitzgerald and coach Wally Masur are flushed with talent in the
doubles with Todd Woodbridge picking up a record-equalling eighth
Wimbledon title 10 days ago. Wayne Arthurs and Woodbridge have a
2-3 win-loss record in Davis Cup but their win over Swedish pair
Jonas Bjorkman-Thomas Enqvist 6-4 6-2 6-2 in April was a milestone.
"In Sweden I think Todd and Wayne played probably 30 percent
better than at any other time they've played for us," Fitzgerald said.
"So I really feel if they can get anywhere near that form, then
they're a pretty good proposition."
The September 19-21 semi-final on Rebound Ace at the 15,000-seat
Rod Laver Arena brings a re-match between Wimbledon finalists
Roger Federer and Philippoussis.
Ticket sales have been "steady", according to Tennis Australia,
but neither they nor Ticketek nor the Flinders Park tennis centre
would give any figures yesterday citing privacy considerations.
Meanwhile, Australia's Fed Cup team has assembled in Wollongong
for the weekend's world group qualifying tie against Colombia
and had their first training session on the WIN Entertainment
Centre's synpave hardcourt surface.
This is the first time the two countries have met in Fed Cup history.
The Australian team is headed by Alicia Molik and includes world No.17
doubles player Rennae Stubbs (five Grand Slam titles), Nicole Pratt
and Samantha Stosur.
