Hewitt keeps points brief
Hewitt keeps points brief

FIVE weeks off may have helped Lleyton Hewitt's game but they don't
seem to have improved his mood.
The former world No. 1 yesterday played his first competitive singles
match since his shock loss in the first round of his Wimbledon defence,
beating plucky American journeyman Cecil Mamiit 6-0 7-5 in the first
round of the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles.
It was hardly a masterpiece ?Hewitt's uncharacteristic unforced errors
kept Mamiit in a match which should have been over before anyone needed
to break a sweat ?but it was a win, nonetheless.
"It's probably one of the tougher matches always, I think, after you
take a couple of weeks off, to come back and play on different
surface," Hewitt said.
"It doesn't really matter how much you practise, to get into that
match condition, the pressure's there, hitting your second serves,
break points down, little stuff that you really can't do in practice.
I'm just happy to get through in straight sets."
That was Hewitt's analysis on the match.
Insightful as it was, his analysis of anything else ?such as the swirl
of controversy which has surrounded him since Wimbledon, most notably
whether his parents need to give their son some breathing room in
light of the departures of two coaches, Darren Cahill and Jason
Stoltenberg ?was not forthcoming.
Hewitt bunkered down, either refusing to answer questions or giving
answers that rarely went beyond monosyllables.
"If you look back on the year, everyone's had their say on what
happened with you at the three majors, what's your view?" The
Australian asked.
"I spoke about that yesterday (after his doubles match with
Mark Philippoussis); I'm not going through that again," he said.
The Australian: "I wasn't here yesterday."
Hewitt: "You'll have to get the press release."
The Australian: "There wasn't a press release."
Hewitt: "Not my fault."
When asked to comment on a quote by Philippoussis, suggesting Hewitt
was as hungry as he had ever seen him, the world No. 5 replied:
"We spoke about that yesterday, too."
When asked how his relationship with new coach Roger Rasheed was
working out, Hewitt said: "It's going well."
The Australian: "You see it as a long-term option?"
Hewitt: "Yeah, hopefully."
When asked for his thoughts about Boris Becker's recommendation
that Hewitt get out on his own a little bit, away from the influence
of his parents, he said: "No, I'm not going to answer that."
