Hewitt Serves Notice With Overpowering Win
Aussie opens with four aces in 6-3, 6-0 victory; Kiefer ousts Schalken.
As soon as he stepped up to the baseline for his first service game,
top seed and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt sent a resounding message
to his opponent, American Michael Joyce, as well as to the entire ATP
circuit. The Australian star unleashed four consecutive aces at the
start of his second-round match at the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles
on Wednesday night, kicking off a 6-3, 6-0 victory and demonstrating
his determination to return to the top. Hewitt looked impressive
throughout, crushing the 30-year-old Joyce's second serves and firing
a total of 14 aces. Though he has yet to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal
this year and has slipped to No. 15 in the ATP Champions Race 2003,
imperiling his bid to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup Houston and
become a three-peat champion, Hewitt's form indicated he's gearing up
for a strong finish to the season.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Hewitt: "I played well, started well, got off to a quick start there
on my serve. Even the three games that I lost, i had game points in
nearly every one... I felt like I took my foot off the pedal at certain
stages, but then again, winning nine straight games from 3-all in the
first, I felt like I was in total control of the match."
On his day off from singles Thursday: "Yeah, it's nice, you know, I've
got doubles late tomorrow afternoon with Flip again. The way the schedule
has turned out for me has been good. You know, to win the tournament
you're going to have to win three in a row, Friday-Saturday-Sunday, and
I feel I've put myself in a good position to do that."
