Clijsters matches Hewitt's top spot
Clijsters matches Hewitt's top spot
LOS ANGELES
LLYETON HEWITT was on a golf course several states away but still monitored
proceedings as his girlfriend Kim Clijsters became the new women's tennis
No.1.
Clijsters became the 12th woman to be No.1 since the rankings began in 1975
when she defeated former No.1 Lindsay Davenport 6-1 3-6 6-1 to capture her
16th career singles title at the WTA event in Los Angeles.
And, at 20 years two months, she finally surpassed her high-achieving
Australian boyfriend at something, reaching the milestone six months
younger than Hewitt was when he began his long run as men's No.1 in
November, 2001.
The Belgian became the only player to reach No.1 without first winning a
grand slam event as she displaced the injured Serena Williams atop the
standings.
She will now be favoured to fill that hole in her resume at the US Open
starting next Monday, with the formidable Williams still missing after
knee surgery.
Among the first callers to Clijsters' mobile phone after the final was
Hewitt who was in Cincinnati for this week's Masters series event but
getting regular score updates on the final.
"He was on the golf course and writing (text) messages to my parents,"
Clijsters said.
Her parents were watching the match live on TV from their home in Belgium
where the crowning of the country's first tennis No.1 caused a stir in her
hometown of Bree.
"Everyone in Belgium has been watching it. In my town there was a
performance, and band or something was playing, and no one showed up,"
said Clijsters.
Clijsters' progress up the rankings this year has contrasted with Hewitt's
fall from No.1 to No.5.
Unlike Hewitt, who has had a patchy season despite winning two US hardcourt
titles, Clijsters has been a model of consistency in the best season of her
career and has amassed a 66-8 win-loss record.
She has reached the semis or better in all 14 tournaments she has played,
collecting six singles titles in 2003 and reaching the semis at the
Australian Open and Wimbledon and the final at the French Open where she
lost to countrywoman Justine Henin-Hardenne.
Not that Hewitt will feel any jealousy.
He has been extremely supportive of her drive to the top, and put aside
the disappointment of early losses at the French Open and Wimbledon to
stay and watch her every match.
Davenport knows how it feels to be No. 1.
"It is a huge accomplishment, and she earned it," said Davenport.
"She's got a lot of game. I think she can get better. She hits the ball
hard and she plays offence and defence extremely well.
"I am sure she wants to start winning slam titles."
