Hewitt Ready for Davis Cup Despite Injury

NEW YORK (Reuters) -
Lleyton Hewitt says the injury he suffered in a quarter-final loss to Juan
Carlos Ferrero at the U.S. Open (news - web sites) on Friday will not prevent
him playing in Australia's Davis Cup semi-final against Switzerland.
Level at a set each and up 5-4 on Ferrero in the third, Hewitt's bid for a
place in Saturday's semi-final against American Andre Agassi began to slip
when injured his left hip.
The 2001 U.S. Open champion called for the trainer and was stretched out on the
Louis Armstrong court for several minutes to receive treatment.
The 22-year-old Australian returned to the court but later said the injury
affected his serve and he had little hope of defeating the third seeded
Spaniard after falling behind 2-1.
"I don't think so," said Hewitt, when questioned if the injury would prevent
him from taking part in the Davis Cup scheduled for Melbourne later this month.
"My plan is to play Davis Cup and give everything I've got. "
"But I didn't expect anything to hamper me here either. So it could be a little
bit of suck-it-up-and-see, and hopefully it doesn't happen."
Hewitt's results in 2003, particularly in the grand slams, have fallen short of
the high standards he set himself when finishing 2001 and 2002 as world number
one.
As a result, he has focused much of his attention on Australia's Davis Cup
effort.
Hewitt said he has no interest in trying to obtain a spot in the season-ending
Masters Cup in Houston because it could interfere with preparations for the
Davis Cup final should Australia beat Switzerland.
"There's a worry I could get hurt (ahead of) a grass court Davis Cup final in
Australia," said Hewitt.
He said he will remain in New York over the weekend to support girlfriend and
world number one Kim Clijsters, who is scheduled to play American Lindsay
Davenport in a women's semi-final later on Friday.
