Australia shrugs off injury cloud over Davis Cup team
SYDNEY, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Australia's Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald has shrugged off concerns about the fitness of Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis in the lead-up to this week's World Group semi-final against Switzerland.
Hewitt injured his hip during his U.S. Open defeat by Juan Carlos Ferrero while Philippoussis is still recovering from a cough which has prevented him from training.
Hewitt tested his hip during a two-hour workout on Monday and, while Fitzgerald said the former world number one might need a rest on Tuesday, he was satisfied he was fully recovered.
"Lleyton's fine, he's worked hard the last few days," Fitzgerald told reporters in Melbourne.
"Today he worked for two and a quarter hours.
"Yesterday he played close to three (hours) outside in the wind and the day before that he had a heavy day too so he's almost getting to the stage where he might deserve a light day."
Philippoussis missed the session and has still not trained since returning to Australia but Fitzgerald said he was not concerned by his absence.
"Mark is always inclined to practise a little less," Fitzgerald said.
"He's not a player who likes to use up all of his good form in practice."
