Third try at Hopman for Hewitt
Third try at Hopman for Hewitt
By Russell Reid
FIREBRAND Lleyton Hewitt will spearhead Australia's Hyundai Hopman Cup campaign
for a third consecutive year at this summer's $1 million mixed teams
international at the Burswood Dome.
Tournament co-founder Paul McNamee said yesterday that Australian men's No. 1
Hewitt would again partner the leading women's player, Alicia Molik.
Like Hewitt, Molik will be playing in her third successive Perth tournament
when the pair team for Hopman Cup XVI from January 3-10.
Former world No. 1 Hewitt and Molik made it to last summer's final but lost
3-0 against Americans Serena Williams and James Blake.
Buoyed by her good form in Perth, Molik won her first singles title in Hobart
last January and reached consecutive finals in Sarasota and Budapest in March
and April.
McNamee said it could be a case of third time lucky for the popular Australian
pairing.
"It's great to have Lleyton and Alicia back for the third year in a row,"
McNamee said yesterday.
"They seem to team up pretty well as we have seen the past couple of years.
They just missed out last time and the year before Lleyton got sick and had
to pull out against Tommy Robredo and Spain went on to win.
"I think they have got a real shot."
Fresh from his Davis Cup heroics against Wimbledon champion Roger Federer last
month, Hewitt has regained peak form and grabbed the world No. 7 ranking on the
back of tournament wins in Scottsdale and Indian Wells.
Hewitt summoned all his tenacity against Federer, eventually prevailing in five
sets in what he rated above his two grand slam tournament titles as the
greatest match, recovery and thrill of his career.
Hewitt held the No. 1 ranking for 17 months before Andre Agassi replaced him at
the top on April 28 this year.
That was not surprising, given the South Australian had insisted his priorities
for 2003 were the grand slam tournaments and Davis Cup.
Hewitt failed to progress beyond the fourth round at the four majors but is set
to play a key role when Australia clashes with Spain in the final of this
year's Davis Cup in Melbourne next month.
Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis are expected to play singles, with Todd
Woodbridge and Wayne Arthurs the favoured doubles combination, on the same
portable grass court used in the 2001 final loss to France at Melbourne Park.
McNamee said Hewitt's recent success against Federer could be a turning point.
"He was struggling a bit going into it and to beat a guy with that skill the
way he did, it was phenomenal," he said. "Hopefully Lleyton will go from
strength to strength and we will win the Davis Cup, he will win the Hopman Cup
with Alicia and maybe even the Australian Open."
