In the other match of the day, Slovakia beat Australia 2-1.
Lleyton Hewitt saw off Karol Kucera 6-2 6-7 (10-8) 6-3 but Daniela Hantuchova
levelled the tie when Australian Alicia Molik had to retire when trailing 3-6
0-3.
The foot injury Molik sustained meant that she was unable to play in the
doubles, which Australia therefore had to forfeit.
"I am happy with the progress I am making," said Hewitt. "It is good work
coming into the Open. I felt like I really took it up a notch."
