Hewitt to caddie for Shark

Although Lleyton Hewitt has often said that, if not for tennis, his sport of
choice would be AFL, Hewitt's growing passion for golf and a budding friendship
with Greg Norman will result in the former world No. 1 caddying for his fellow
sporting superstar at next month's Australian PGA Championship at Coolum.
Hewitt, a Wimbledon and US Open champion, will carry the bag of Norman - the
two-time British Open winner - for six days, including practice rounds and the
pro-am, less than two weeks after leading Australia in the Davis Cup final
against Spain.
"I can confirm it, and it should be very exciting," PGA event chairman Tony
Roosenburg said yesterday.
"They became friends when they played in the pro-am at last year's Heineken
Classic, and obviously hit it off then, and then Greg went to see Lleyton play
tennis in America, so that's when it all developed.
"They totally worked this out between themselves; we had nothing to do with
it. They also decided not to put out a press release, but just let the story
get out, and now it has, and we're absolutely delighted. This will probably
give us global exposure, with Lleyton being on the bag."
Roosenburg also said both men would take their professional partnership
"very, very seriously". Hewitt will not seek, or be offered, a percentage of
any prizemoney, and Norman will pay his regular caddie, Tony Navarro, despite
giving him the week off. The December 11-14 tournament at the Hyatt Regency
will also feature Rich Beem, Adam Scott, and Steve Elkington.
Norman and Hewitt have kept in touch since playing in the Heineken pro-am
with Pat Rafter and Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald.
As well as supporting his new friend at the Miami tournament in March, it is
believed Norman has counselled Hewitt on his testy relationship with the
Australian media, and extolled the benefits of using publicity to his
advantage.
A multi-skilled sportsman, Hewitt, as one would expect, is also a keen and
competitive golfer with a handicap of eight.
"He loves his golf," Peter Johnston, Tennis Australia's head of men's tennis,
said yesterday.
"It's been a while since I've played with him, but he was pretty bloody good."
