When injuries forced former world No. 1 Martina Hingis into premature
retirement after the 2002 season, she tried staying close to the game by doing
commentary for ESPN and Australian television. "That just made me miss it,''
Hingis said. "I'd rather be a little farther away.''
This season, she found a better way: playing World Team Tennis with the New
York Sportimes, where she won 26 sets and lost only one to lead the team to the
WTT championship. Hingis was named Most Valuable Player of the final weekend
and has already told league officials she wants to come back.
"I survived it,'' she said. "The format [playing one set of singles and one
each of doubles and mixed doubles on a given day] gave me time to recover
between matches. I've always liked playing for a team, whether it was Fed Cup
or Hopman Cup, where you play not just for yourself, and all your teammates are
there to encourage you.''
The experience didn't give Hingis second thoughts about leaving the women's
pro tour, however. "I have to be realistic,'' she said. "The top 10 is a
different story. I don't think I could handle that.''
Although Hingis occasionally hits with junior players at the tennis academy
owned by her mother and former coach, Melanie Molitor, she said she has tried
to find joy in the things she couldn't do when tennis consumed her life. She
skis black diamond trails and rides her horses, Amaro and Lytizia, in regional
jumping competitions.
"I just watched [Michael] Jordan on '60 Minutes' and I think like him, I'm
always going to need some kind of challenge in my life," Hingis said. "For me,
even having my own house, being self-sufficient, is a challenge because I never
had to do that before.''
Hingis will wrap up the year by playing in WTT's annual All-Star match and AIDS
benefit cohosted by league founder Billie Jean King and venerable rocker Sir
Elton John. The event is in Hershey, Pa., on Monday and also will feature
coheadliners Andy Roddick, James Blake and Hingis' old doubles partner, Anna
Kournikova, who will play with her against Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur.
Event information is available at www.wtt.com.
