Comeback Player of the Year honours went to Martina Hingis, who returned to
the Tour after a three-year layoff due to injury. The former No.1 began the
year unranked and surged to No.7 by the end of the season, picking up two
singles titles at Rome and Kolkata, notched several wins over Top 10 players
and posted quarterfinal finishes at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
