With the 2005 NBA Draft just hours away, BobcatsBasketball.com has
sorted through what analysts across the country are saying about whom
the Bobcats should select with fifth and 13th picks:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ‧ Charles Gardner
#5 -- Chris Paul ‧ 5-11 ‧ 175 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Wake Forest ‧ Sophomore
The Wake Forest guard drops out of the top four and the Bobcats are only
too happy to grab the native of Winston-Salem, N.C.
#13 -- Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ꄊE Sophomore
Coach-general manager Bernie Bickerstaff really likes the forward, who
came back for a second workout with the Bobcats last week.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ‧ Sekou Smith
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
The championship-caliber floor general Bobcats need.
#13 -- Antoine Wright ‧ 6-7 ‧ 210 lbs. ‧ Guard/Forward ‧ Texas A&M ‧
Junior
Draft's best shooter eases pressure on Emeka Okafor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Portland Oregonian ‧ Jim Beseda
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores Academy
#13 -- Yaroslav Korolev ‧ 6-9 ‧ 203 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ CSKA Moscow (Russia)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Orleans Times-Picayune ‧ John Reid
#5 -- Deron Williams ‧ 6-3 ‧ 210 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Illinois ‧ Junior
#13 -- Antoine Wright ‧ 6-7 ‧ 210 lbs. ‧ Guard/Forward ‧ Texas A&M ‧ Junior
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlotte Observer ‧ Rick Bonnell
#5 – Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
Paul and Deron Williams are gone, but they still get a point guard.
#13 – Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ‧ Sophomore
If this happens -- and don't bet on it -- the expansion team would have scored a coup.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Salt Lake Tribune
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores Academy
Second-year 'Cats could be left out of the point guard derby.
#13 -- Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ‧ Sophomore
He might be the perfect complement to Emeka Okafor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New York Times ‧ Howard Beck
#5 -- Chris Paul ‧ 5-11 ‧ 175 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Wake Forest ‧ Sophomore
Second-year franchise needs a sharp point guard to complement power forward Emeka Okafor.
#13 -- Joey Graham ‧ 6-7 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Oklahoma State ‧ Senior
After drafting a point guard at No. 5, they get him some help.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Times ‧ Mark Heisler
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ North Carolina ‧ Junior
In a late switch, the Bobcats take a local favorite. Great athlete and
improving shooter but not the playmaker Deron Williams and Paul are.
#13 -- Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut
‧ Sophomore
Great package of size and athleticism but still has to show he's not an
airhead.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Orlando Sentinel ‧ Brian Schmitz
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores Academy
Has drawn comparisons to T-Mac.
#13 -- Hakim Warrick ‧ 6-9 ‧ 219 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Syracuse ‧ Senior
Bobcats need an athlete -- and get one.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chicago Tribune ‧ Sam Smith
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ North Carolina ‧ Junior
Local guy, leader, point guard, everything they need.
#13 -- Martell Webster ‧ 6-7 ‧ 210 ‧ Guard/Forward ‧ Seattle Prep HS
Combo guard who is a big-time shooter to run with Felton and produce and young, explosive backcourt.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com ‧ Chad Ford
#5 -- Danny Granger ‧ 6-8 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ New Mexico ‧ Senior
The Bobcats are trying to move up in the draft to get their hands on Marvin
Williams or Paul. If Paul, Marvin and Deron Williams are off the board, the
team will choose between potential (Green) and immediate impact (Granger).
Given Bernie Bickerstaff's track record last year, don't be surprised if it's
Granger.
#13 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ North Carolina ‧ Junior
This is a real steal for the Bobcats if they can land Felton here. The
Bobcats need a point guard badly and he's a local kid to boot. He's the
fastest point guard in the draft baseline to baseline, has improved his
outside shooting and is an excellent floor leader. A major upgrade over
what they have now.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CBSSportsLine.com ‧ Gregg Doyel
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ North Carolina ‧ Junior
Felton might not be a better prospect than Deron Williams -- but then again,
he might. Too close to call, so go with the local guy and sell some tickets.
#13 -- Sean May ‧ 6-9 ‧ 266 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
Between May and Emeka Okafor, the Bobcats will be able to defend the other
team's power forward and center.
Tony Meija
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ North Carolina ‧ Junior
Felton ends up as the surprise of the Top 5, going ahead of preps Martell
Webster and Gerald Green as Bernie Bickerstaff and Co. tabs his point guard
of the future. The fact the South Carolina native is a local drawing card
could be the final deal-maker.
#13 – Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ‧
Sophomore
The Bobcats have had the versatile Villanueva in for numerous workouts and
could add him to a frontcourt rotation that includes college teammate Emeka
Okafor and Primoz Brezec.
Matt Lawrence
#5 -- Sean May ‧ 6-9 ‧ 266 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
May bolstered his draft value with a clutch performances in March. He'll
make a fantastic 1-2 combo with last season's Rookie of the Year, Emeka
Okafor. The NCAA Championship MVP has the talent to come in and average
around 10 PPG and 6 RPG right away.
#13 -- Danny Granger ‧ 6-8 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ New Mexico ‧ Senior
Granger is a rarity in the game today because of his all-around talent.
He was the only player in Division I-A to average 18.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG,
2.0 APG, 2.0 SPG and 2.0 BPG in 2004. The young 'Cats are in a developmental
phase still, so Granger could start immediately.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBCSports.com ‧ Ray Glier
#5 -- Chris Paul ‧ 5-11 ‧ 175 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Wake Forest ‧ Sophomore
The Bobcats luck into a prize. This is what they wanted all along and the
bonus is they get a guard motivated by being the second point guard selected
in the draft, not the first.
#13 -- Joey Graham ‧ 6-7 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Oklahoma State ‧ Senior
If Raymond Felton slides all the way here, the Bobcats get him, but that's
not likely. Charlotte needs guards they can trust and this is a player who
has been reliable and only getting better.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TSN.ca
#5 -- Deron Williams ‧ 6-3 ‧ 210 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Illinois ‧ Junior
Though Brevin Knight did a solid job last year, the Bobcats would like a
long-term solution at the point and Deron Williams is the best one left on
the board. Williams is a big, strong point guard that plays great defence
and should be able to contribute right away.
#13 -- Joey Graham ‧ 6-7 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Oklahoma State ‧ Senior
Joey Graham is a great athlete that likes to run. He could turn into an
elite NBA defender. Graham and Gerald Wallace would give the Bobcats a lot
options at small forward.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sporting News ‧ Sean Deveney
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf ShoresAcademy
The Bobcats likely must choose Green's athleticism and potential or the
proven ability of point guard Raymond Felton, who has the added lure of
being a Carolina hero. The franchise still is building -- and is a long
way from being competitive -- so the Bobcats can afford to make the high
-potential pick here. Green is an incredible athlete who already is a solid
shooter and hard worker. The team needs a slashing wing man who can create
shots.
#13 -- Fran Vasquez ‧ 6-10 ‧ 238 lbs. ‧ Forward/Center ‧ Unicaja Malaga
(Spain)
Does Charlotte really need another big man with Primoz Brezec and Emeka
Okafor already on hand? Well, Bobcats officials like Vazquez's size (6-10),
toughness and experience. Assuming they get Green at No. 5 and Felton is
off the board here, this would be a logical, safe pick. Vazquez played well
in Spain's top league and probably is the most NBA-ready player in the draft.
Of course, the Bobcats will take Wright or Warrick is still available. There
also is the Villanueva possibility -- the Bobcats like
both Villanueva and Vazquez, but Vazquez is a more proven player.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SportsIllustrated.com ‧ Ian Thomsen
#5 -- Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ‧ Sophomore
No one else has him rated so high, but Bernie Bickerstaff goes for his
athleticism and length..
#13 -- Jarrett Jack ‧ 6-3 ‧ 202 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Geogia Tech ‧ Junior
Another big surprise, but Bobcats like the shooting range and experience of
this playmaker.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dime Magazine
#5 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
The Bobcats may find themselves in a bad place. The 'Cats need either Paul
or Deron to slip. Otherwise, they have a tough choice. Assuming Paul and
Williams are gone, there is no perfect pick. So we'll go with a big hunch
and say they take Felton. Makes sense ... with him and Okafor you have
experienced winners.
#13 -- Andrew Bynum ‧ 7-0 ‧ 285 lbs. ‧ Center ‧ Metuchen St. Joseph HS (N.J.)
Bynum is the mystery player. Has great size and had impressive workouts,
but isn't ready for The League. The Lakers are infatuated, but we don't see
them taking a project. The T-Wolves are interested too. But we think the
'Cats grab him at lucky No. 13 and patiently develop him. Charlotte has
time to wait.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sports Forecaster Magazine
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores
Academy
The Bobs are hoping for a franchise point guard at this spot, but with
Paul and Deron Williams likely gone by now they'll probably go with the
‘next best player' line of thinking. Green has the goods to eventually
be a star, but it won't be for a few years.
#13 -- Joey Graham ‧ 6-7 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Oklahoma State ‧ Senior
This is a no-brainer for the Bobcats. Graham is a true sleeper who has
been dominating pre-draft auditions, and he fits Charlotte's mold: He's
an athletic but gritty defense-first player. He reminds some of Shawn
Marion without the offensive instincts, and Charlotte would be delighted
to grab him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sports Network
#5 -- Danny Granger ‧ 6-8 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ New Mexico ‧ Senior
Granger's athleticism and overall ability makes him a perfect fit to play
next to power forward Emeka Okafor.
#13 -- Raymond Felton ‧ 6-1 ‧ 198 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
The Bobcats are thrilled that Felton is available for them to select with
their second first-round pick. Charlotte hopes the North Carolina product
is its point guard for the next 10-plus years.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scout.com ‧ Frank Burlison
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores
Academy
It's more likely he slips in the lottery (all the way to No. 11 and Orlando?) than it is he is tabbed as early as No. 3. Martell Webster is the much more polished "player" but many are enthralled -- as well they should be -- with Green's speed, leaping ability and deep range on his jump shot.
#13 -- Sean May ‧ 6-9 ‧ 266 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧North Carolina ‧ Junior
If the Bobcats don't deal this slot in an attempt to bag Marvin Williams
or Chris Paul, they might find it tough to bypass this Tar Heel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FanBall.com
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores Academy
Green is the top high school player in the draft and is a perfect fit for
a team that isn't expected to win many games. He has had maturity issues
in the past and will need to spend the summer bulking up, but his raw
athleticism is too great to be ignored. He's probably not going to help
too many fantasy teams out early in the year, but he'll be a name to
remember if he works his way into the Bobcats rotation.
#13 -- Joey Graham ‧ 6-7 ‧ 225 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Oklahoma State
‧ Senior
Having already grabbed the next T-Mac (Green) earlier, this pick is
essentially wide open. With Emeka Okafor and Green already in the fold
to build around, the athletic Graham fits in well as a complementary
piece. He played at the highest level in college ball and tested out
physically as one of the best athletes in the draft. He should be able
to step in and contribute right away for the Cats; in fact, he'll probably
make a bigger fantasy impact than Green, selected eight spots ahead of him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HoopsHype.com
#5 -- Gerald Green ‧ 6-8 ‧ 200 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Houston Gulf Shores Academy
The high schooler with the best chance to go in the lottery. Has been
constantly compared to T-Mac.
#13 -- Antoine Wright ‧ 6-7 ‧ 210 lbs. ‧ Guard/Forward ‧ Texas A&M
‧ Junior
Very talented offensive player. Can shoot the lights out. Tough enough
for the NBA game?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
InsideHoops.com ‧ Jeff Lenchiner
#5 -- Chris Paul ‧ 5-11 ‧ 175 lbs. ‧ Guard ‧ Wake Forest ‧ Sophomore
True, pass-first point guard whose lack of height concerns some.
#13 – Charlie Villanueva ‧ 6-11 ‧ 240 lbs. ‧ Forward ‧ Connecticut ‧
Sophomore
Skilled big man, can create and operate in post, rebounds, can make open
outside shots, can operate in a team offense. Still building his strength
up.
