In My Opinion
Bobcats need a point guard
Tom Sorensen
The Charlotte Bobcats have a tough assignment tonight. They have to become
relevant.
How do they become relevant? They acquire a player who will help push them
into the playoffs.
The Bobcats have so much working against them that the only way they can
become a factor in this town is to make the postseason. The more they win,
the more distant their various misdeeds become.
How do they win?
This one is easy. They either trade the ninth pick for a point guard or they
select one.
There are four worthy point guards available in tonight's NBA draft. Russell
Westbrook of UCLA almost certainly will be gone when the Bobcats select and
Jerryd Bayless of Arizona probably will be. This leaves D.J. Augustin of
Texas and Mario Chalmers of Kansas.
Augustin, 20, is almost slight. But he runs an offense beautifully. And get
this: He would rather create shots for his teammates than for himself. And he
can shoot. There is purity to his game.
Chalmers, 22, is the most underrated player in the draft, and he'll be a much
better pro than people outside Kansas realize. He is a superior shooter and
defender who can go to the basket and run the show.
If I'm Charlotte, I don't even consider a big guy such as 7-foot Brook Lopez
of Stanford or 6-10 Kevin Love of UCLA. Both could be available. But are
Lopez and Love better than Sean May? They're merely healthier.
Point guard is one of the toughest positions in sports and the most important
position in basketball. Raymond Felton plays it for Charlotte. He might be
the truth, in which case the new guy backs him up.
Felton also might be Vinnie Johnson of the 1980s Detroit Pistons. The
Microwave was an important reserve who practically was scoring before he
checked in to a game. A true point guard frees Felton to play that role.
Perhaps Felton, who offers speed, fearlessness and athleticism, can run Larry
Brown's offense. I don't know, and I don't see how the Bobcats could. They
have to add a point guard.
We now reach the point in the column where you ask, and if you want to be
indignant I won't be offended, “Who are you to tell Charlotte's basketball
professionals what to do?”
Your question is legitimate, and I appreciate you taking time to ask.
Here's who I am:
Not an FOM (Friend of Michael), which means I am free to offer an opinion
that could conflict with management's.
Not a guy with ties to the North Carolina Tar Heels, which means I am free to
offer an opinion that could conflict with management's.
I'm good at this.
In 2005 I wrote that the Bobcats should trade their two first-round picks
(which became Felton and May) to move up and take Chris Paul. I wrote this
three times.
In 2006, I wrote that the Bobcats should use the third pick in the draft
(which became Adam Morrison) to take Brandon Roy.
Question: What do you call a team with a backcourt of Paul and Roy?
