[分享] Healthy Chandler fits Bobcats plans

New Charlotte Bobcats center Tyson Chandler knows his coach, Larry Brown.
He's played against Brown's teams several times during the seven years he's
been in the NBA. And they spoke on the phone Tuesday morning, after the trade
that brought Chandler from the New Orleans Hornets to the Bobcats became
official.
“I've always admired him from the sidelines, going up against him,” said
Chandler. “I've admired his teams and how he's put them together.”
Then came a good-natured dig at Brown's longevity (24 years) in the league.
“And I have ESPN Classic,” Chandler said.
This is the second time within five months that Chandler has been traded. The
Hornets dealt him to the Oklahoma City Thunder during February, but the trade
was rescinded when he failed a physical because of a toe injury, sending him
back to New Orleans.
Now, after having the toe (and an injured ankle) operated on during May,
Chandler says he feels healthy.
“I feel a lot better than I did on the court last year,” he said. “At the
end of the (season), my ankle was hurting pretty bad. So I went in for an
operation and we decided we might as well clean everything up. For the first
time in a couple of years, I've got good movement in my toe.”
At 7-foot-1, Chandler is a taller, longer player than 6-10 Okafor. If Okafor
was more of a defensive presence under the basket, Chandler will help the
Bobcats in the open court.
“Tyson athletically has great length and great quickness,” Brown said. “
Emeka is more your prototype center. Tyson can get up the floor more and
press more, which is something we like to do. Tyson can guard on the
perimeter and if you look at this league, there are so many teams that like
to pick-and-roll after pick-and-roll. With your center and your (power
forward), you have to have guys who can handle that.”
Although Chandler will be the Bobcats' starter at center, Brown expects him
to also play some power forward. But Chandler – who played with one of the
league's top point guards in New Orleans' Chris Paul – also knows that in
Boris Diaw he'll be alongside one of the NBA's better-passing power forwards.
He'll also have to adjust to the different styles of the Bobcats' point
guards, Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin.
“Anybody who plays with Chris Paul is going to benefit,” said Brown. “But
Raymond, D.J., Boris and (small forward) Gerald (Wallace) can all pass the
ball. Tyson will jibe well. He fits in really well.
“We want a center who's out on the break, rebounding the ball and bringing
it up with a couple of dribbles. Tyson has those skills.”
Brown and general manager Rod Higgins wouldn't say Tuesday whether they're
finished trying to find trades, or whether they're looking at bringing in a
free agent to help on the front line. The addition of Chandler's contract
adds about $1.3million to Charlotte's payroll next season as the team hovers
around the league's salary cap of $57.7million. He has two years remaining on
his contract, although the second year (2010-11) is a player option. And many
teams in the Eastern Conference already had drastically improved themselves
during the offseason.
“We're trying to get better,” said Brown. “We want to acquire talent and
be fiscally responsible. We're aware the whole league's getting better. The
teams behind us – Washington and Toronto – have improved and the teams
ahead of us got a whole lot better.
“We can't afford to stand pat.”
