United close on Carrick deal Manchester United appear to be closing in on the capture of England midfielder Michael Carrick. Tottenham have been fighting hard to keep hold of the former West Ham star, but Sir Alex Ferguson looks to have finally got his man. Ferguson first made a move before the World Cup finals, but a then bid of around 10 million was quickly rebuffed by Tottenham. Now United, who are set to pocket just over 10 million from the sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid, have reportedly upped the ante in the Carrick chase. Earlier this month Martin Jol admitted Tottenham might not be able to reject 20 million for Carrick - although he was desperate for the 24-year-old to stay. A bid of around 16 million is widely reported to have been accepted by Spurs, and it is claimed a deal could be announced on Friday - Carrick's birthday.
