Danny Rose and David Button have experienced the heartbreak of a group stage
exit at the European Under-19 Championships with England, despite a
convincing 3-0 win over Greece on Sunday.
The lads knew nothing less than a win would do as they looked to book their
place in this week's semi-finals having taken just one point from their
opening two games.
Brian Eastick's side needed hosts Czech Republic to do them a favour and beat
Italy in Mlada Boleslav, but the Azzuri ran out 4-3 winners, sending the
Young Lions home early as a result.
But Danny and David can hold their heads up high after some good performances
over the three games, especially Sunday's win in Liberec.
Danny was heavily involved in much of England's early dominance, creating
chances for Daniel Sturridge and Freddie Sears in the first half.
Manchester City's Ben Mee broke the deadlock three minutes after the break
before Danny saw one of his own shots cleared off the line.
Goalkeeper David was soon called into action and had to make two key saves as
Greece pressed for an equaliser, but further goals from Sears and Sturridge
killed the game off.
However it was not to be this time, but as a result of reaching this stage,
England have qualified for next summer's Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, in
which both Danny and David will be hoping to be involved.
