Bob Cooney: Sixerville: Iverson's been good for the team so far
HIS GAME has changed as dramatically as the Sixers team he now plays for
differs from the one he led to the NBA Finals in 2001.
The reason? Age, no doubt. If you compare 34-year-old Allen Iverson's speed
and quickness with what he had during his prior tenure - not close. If you
try to match it up to the players he's playing against now, the lack of foot
speed certainly is evident, particularly on the defensive end.
Another reason? Iverson has matured as a player and as a person.
He might not acknowledge to the reporters gathered at practice and games
every day or tell his teammates that his game is not the same. He might not
even acknowledge it to himself, but his game speaks volumes to the subject.
On the court, he is not the 20-shots-a-game player people remember. Since he
returned to the team in early December, he has been almost a decoy on the
court, the player other teams still focus on, but he is not the primary focus
of the offense. His 10.7 shots per game reflect that.
He has become a mentor to a lot of players on a very young team, sharing his
wealth of knowledge from 13-plus NBA seasons, and has brought a sense of calm
and confidence to a team that has had very, very little to be happy about
during its 34 games in which it has only won 10.
This tenure for him has been only 10 games so far, as Iverson missed four
with an arthritic left knee. The team has won four of them, not bad when you
consider it won only six of the other 23.
"When you look at it, game in and game out, you don't really have one person
putting up that many shots," Iverson said when asked how his game has
changed.
"I think it's about guys taking the best shot. I'm as aggressive as
I've always been, it's just that the defense has been trying to take it away
from me. As bad as I want to get an easy shot, I can get my teammate an
easier one. I'm just taking what they give me. I'm not trying to go out there
and do too much. I just got back and haven't been playing that many games, so
it's kind of hard to go out there and put up 20 to 25 shots a night, being as
I wasn't able to move like I'm capable of moving. But I'm just taking
whatever they give me. If they can give my teammate a better shot than they
can give me, then we'll live with that."
When Iverson was brought back to the team, I was on the fence about his
return. My trepidations revolved mostly around his playing time and how it
could hurt young guards Lou Williams and Jrue Holiday.
I heard from many e-mailers about how his addition would be a distraction to
the team, mentioning Iverson's offcourt antics and his distaste for practice.
They were all good and legitimate points. There was also the common theme
wondering what he would ultimately bring: more wins, and does the
organization really want that; a semi-solution for a year to make a run at
the playoffs, then lose again in the first round, costing the team a lottery
pick.
All that is understood, believe me. But my mind has been changed. I now think
the addition of Iverson is good for this team.
When he was brought here, the team was 5-15. More than that, the attitude was
bad, there seemed to be no urgency, or confidence, to win games. Perhaps a
lot of that has to do with coach Eddie Jordan, as many suggested via e-mail.
Maybe a lot of it had to do with the team's youth.
Iverson has brought a breath of fresh air. Not saying that will lead to so
many more wins or vastly improve the team. But Williams and Holiday,
particularly, have benefited from No. 3's return. And, probably more than
anyone, so has Sam Dalembert. Though many loathe him, there can be no denying
Dalembert's play has improved on both ends of the floor since "The Answer's"
return.
If nothing else, maybe that improves the Sixers' chances of moving their
center after this season, if they so choose.
"It's been fun, it's hard for teams to guard us," Williams said of his
backcourt mate. "Teams have a hard time guarding it. For me, it's been a
dream come true. It's been a huge pleasure to be out there on the court with
him trying to win games. Being in those struggles, playing hard with him and
being out there with that caliber of player has been fun for me."

Said Jordan, on Iverson adjusting to his different role: "He's a terrific
player, a good pro. He has a lot of experience. He knows where he is
physically and basketballwise and he knows what this team needs, and he's
providing that for us.
"When you've got a knack, a skill like him, you understand the game. When you
have an IQ like he has, he knows. He's just still a terrific player right
now, 34 years old and after 13 years, he's adjusted."
Iverson's addition probably will lead to some additional wins. To many Sixers
fans, that could be a bad thing if it hurts their potential lottery position.
But the team needed something to get through the season. Something to keep
the progress of young players from being halted; something to bring a
positive to a primarily negative group after only five wins in 20 games;
something to make many players want to come to the gym every day instead of
having to.
Iverson has done all that. And I think he knows it and craves his new role.
"Absolutely, that's what I'm trying to do," Iverson said when asked whether
he's out to make his teammates better. "I think a lot of teams are accustomed
to the way I play and are trying to take a lot of things away, as far as me
getting in the paint and creating things that way. Once they give me that
attention and try to keep me out of the paint, obviously it opens up lanes
for other guys and opens up shots for other guys, and that's my whole thing,
just trying to get my teammates easy looks."
--Iverson
