But after his appearance in instructional league, the organization decided Aubrey would be better served by heading home to Louisiana to rest the hamstring strain that bothered him since July and caused him to miss nearly a month. "It was a mutual decision from our standpoint and from Michael's standpoint," general manager Mark Shapiro said. "We felt like it was better for him to rest it over the offseason and come back in 2005 completely healthy. The experience would have been good for any of our players, but in this situation we felt like this was the route to take." But Shapiro remains upbeat about the move, designed to take defensive pressure off Smith and allow him to focus on his bat, which has been streaky at best. "He understands that this is to take the pressure off him," he said. "He's definitely going to hit and we just want him to concentrate on things at the plate."
