Ivanisevic eyes Wimbledon encore
Ivanisevic eyes Wimbledon encore
21 January 2003
Goran Ivanisevic says he wants to play at Wimbledon one more time as he prepares
to play in his first tournament this year.
The Croatian star had a shoulder operation eight months ago and he's picked a
Challenger tournament in Germany as his first tournament.
Ivanisevic picked the same Heilbronn Open in 2001 to relaunch his career after
slipping into a deep slump.
"I am now in an almost identical situation, except that I am coming back from an
injury," Ivanisevic said. "I am a bit superstitious after all."
Eventually, the big server got a wild card for Wimbledon and went all the way
to capture the title, becoming the first wild card to win a Grand Slam title.
But Ivanisevic's first priority is Croatia's home Davis Cup match against the
United States from February 7-9 in Zagreb.
"I came here to put myself through a tough test. If I get through it, I will
decide whether I can play doubles at the Davis Cup," he said.
Ivanisevic said his shoulder still hurt when he serves. "Perhaps it will last
another two months. I must be patient," he said.
But he added: "I want to play Wimbledon one more time. But I don't want to open
the tournament and then fly home immediately. Any time I go to Wimbledon, I
think I can win.''
