Ivanisevic to miss Davis Cup tie against Spain
26 March 2003
ZAGREB: Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic will miss Croatia's Davis
Cup tie against Spain next month, the Croatian Tennis Association (HTS) said
on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old cut his heel on a seashell while walking barefoot on a Miami
beach last week.
Doctors initially thought Ivanisevic would be able to play within a week, but
further tests showed he would be out of action for at least another 10 days.
Coach Niki Pilic has named Ivan Ljubicic, Mario Ancic, Lovro Zovko and 21-year
old newcomer Mario Radic on the team for the tie which will take place in
Valencia on April 4-6, the HTS said in a statement.
Croatia, led by Ljubicic who won all three of his matches, staged a surprise
victory in their first round tie against the United States in Zagreb in
February.
The big-serving Ivanisevic, still battling to regain his form after shoulder
surgery last May, only played in the doubles.
He has said that this year's Wimbledon -- where he triumphed in 2001 -- could
be his final tournament.
