Goran Commits To Nottingham By Adrianna Outlaw 05/08/2003 Before his career comes to a close, 2001 Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic wants to make one more appearance on the All England Club's grass courts. In preparation for the grass-court Grand Slam, Ivanisevic has committed to playing the Samsung Open in Nottingham, tournament organizers announced today. The lethal-serving lefthander joins a Nottingham field that includes Jonas Bjorkman, Younes El Aynaoui, Wayne Ferreira and Mikhail Youzhny. The tournament is scheduled for June 16th-22nd. The 31-year-old Croatian missed much of the 2002 season after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder. Playing his first ATP event since March of 2002 at Dubai in February, Ivanisevic trailed Russian qualifier Andrei Stoliarov 5-6 when he sprinted for a wide shot and suddenly crumpled to the court after feeling his right knee buckle. He was forced to retire from the match. Chronic shoulder and elbow pain have plagued Ivanisevic this season. Even the beach was a danger zone for Ivanisevic, who stepped on a seashell while walking on the beach during the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami in March and underwent surgery last month to have the seashell removed. Despite his injuries, Ivanisevic is determined to play the grass-court Grand Slam this summer and said he will not retire without playing one more Wimbledon. "Definitely, I (am) going to go Wimbledon this year," Ivanisevic said. "Even if I have to go in a wheelchair, I go there. If that's the case, like I say, that's going to be my last one." Ivanisevic has often said he believes his remarkable run to the 2001 Wimbledon title as a wild card came with a bit of divine intervention and as a result the colorful Croatian has a philosophical approach to the series of injuries that have stalled his career since. "Before Wimbledon started when I won in 2001 I said: 'Just give me this Wimbledon,' I said to God. 'And I don't have to play tennis anymore in my life,' " Ivanisevic said. "I think he's doing that now. I won, but I'm not playing tennis. I know see how I am going to play again with this shoulder and elbow. I think you can't bargain with God. He gave me something I wanted all my life and he has to take something in return. That means that it doesn't take me forever, but it takes my tennis." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.97.78
