In the final round of qualifying for the INDESIT ATP Milano Indoor, rising Ita

r Switzerland's George Bastl on Monday.
Seppi, who will turn 20 later this month, said: "I have no ranking goal for 200
4 but I would like to qualify for ATP main draws and win my first Challenger ti
tle. I finished school last year so I am concentrating on playing tennis. I act
ually wanted to enrol in University last year but I missed the deadline...I tho
ught it was December 31st but it was September 30th so that will have to wait."
Seppi then made it a day to remember as he teamed up with Goran Ivanisevic to
reach the second round of the doubles main draw. Ivanisevic and Seppi came
through 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 against Dutch pairing Raemon Sluiter and Martin
Verkerk. It was Ivanisevic's first competitive match since losing in the first
round of the Stella Artois Championship at Queen's last June. He last played
doubles in the first round of the Davis Cup in 2003 with Ivan Ljubicic, helping
Croatia defeat the U.S.A. in Zagreb in February with a five-set victory over
James Blake and Mardy Fish. Ivanisevic makes his singles return on Tuesday when
he takes on Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic.
TUESDAY MATCHES
First round action begins on Tuesday at the INDESIT ATP Milano Indoor, with two
Italians, two former Grand Slam singles champions and the reigning Australian
Open doubles champion taking center stage.
Opening proceedings on Centre Court will be Italian qualifier Vincenzo Santopad
re and Gregory Carraz, who go head-to-head for the first time on the ATP circui
t. Santopadre, the 32-year-old from Rome, qualified for his first Milan main dr
aw after defeating countryman Daniele Bracciali in the final qualifying round.
Carraz, the 28-year-old Frenchman, also is making his first appearance in Milan
this year.
Following them onto court will be Australian Open doubles champion Fabrice Sant
oro, the Frenchman who takes on rising Croatian star Mario Ancic in the first r
ound. Santoro first played in Milan in 1995 and then again in 2001, but is yet
to progress beyond the second round. The 31-year-old successfully defended his
title in Melbourne two weeks ago with countryman Michael Llodra, defeating Bob
and Mike Bryan in the final. Ancic, the 19-year-old making his first appearance
in Milan, reached the third round at the Australian Open in January with conse
cutive five-set victories over Raemon Sluiter and Alex Corretja.
Former Australian Open singles champion Thomas Johansson continues his comeback
from injury as he faces Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the first round. Johansso
n, who defeated Marat Safin to win the Melbourne title in 2002, also makes his
Milan debut this week. The 28-year-old Swede, who missed the entire 2003 season
after undergoing left knee surgery almost exactly a year ago (Feb. 11, 2003),
made his return to the ATP circuit in Adelaide and reached the quarterfinals (l
. to Dent). Davydenko, who captured two titles in 2003 in Adelaide and Estoril,
lost to Roger Federer on his Milan debut in 2002 and then to Richard Krajicek
in the opening round 12 months ago.
In an all-Spanish clash, third seed Tommy Robredo faces two-time Roland Garros
finalist Alex Corretja for a place in the second round. Robredo, the 21-year-ol
d from Hostalric, defeated Corretja in their only previous encounter in Barcelo
na last year. Corretja, playing in Milan for the first time since 1997, defeate
d Martin Verkerk in the opening round at the Australian Open before losing to A
ncic in five sets. Robredo reached the semifinals in Chennai (l. to Srichaphan)
and the quarterfinals in Sydney (l. to Moya) before going out to Gaston Gaudio
in the first round in Melbourne.
Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic makes his eagerly awaited return to
ATP action when he comes up against Bohdan Ulihrach. Ivanisevic, the two-time M
ilan champion in 1996-97 and finalist in 1992, is making his first appearance o
n the circuit since losing in the first round at Queen’s last year to Jan Vace
k. The Croat suffered from left shoulder, elbow and right knee injuries through
out the year. He is looking to record his first singles victory (excluding Chal
lengers) since helping Croatia defeat Germany in the Davis Cup in February 2002
(went 2-0 against Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler). Ivanisevic has a 7-1
record against Ulihrach, the Czech who claimed his first victory in their last
encounter in Rotterdam back in 1999.
In the day’s final match on Centre Court, Italian qualifier Andreas Seppi will
be looking to record his first ATP victory when he takes on No. 7 seed Sargis
Sargsian. The 19-year-old Seppi made his ATP debut in Kitzbuhel last year (l. t
o Mutis) and lost to Jose Acasuso in the first round in Bucharest. Sargsian adv
