Japan wins Group A to meet Qatar in AFC Youth Championship quarterfinals
Wednesday, 29/09/04
Sixteen-year-old striker Takayuki Morimoto struck the game's sole goal to help
the Japan Under-19 team beat Vietnam 1-0 and win Group A in the AFC Youth
Championship on September 29 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
With the result, Japan finished the group stage with a 3-0-0 record and will
play Group B runnerup Qatar in the quarterfinals. If Japan wins that game, it
will clinch one of the four berths to next year's World Youth Championship in
the Netherlands.
The goal came in 65th minute. When a Vietnam defender cleared a Kazuma Wata-
nabe cross from the area, Morimoto stuck out his right leg on the edge of the
box to collect the ball before turning and firing home an 18-meter shot. The
Tokyo Verdy 1969 striker has found the net in the last two matches.
"I was not playing well and making many mistakes, so I am glad I was able to
score a goal for the team," said Morimoto. "I hope we can bring this momentum
to our next game and play well for a win."
