Japan women's team downs New Zealand in friendly
Saturday, 21/05/05
The Japan women's team romped over New Zealand 6-0 in the Kirin Challenge
Cup friendly on Saturday at National Nishigaoka Stadium in Tokyo.
Homare Sawa and young forward Yuki Nakazato each struck twice to highlight
the "Nadeshiko" Japan victory.
"We planned the game, winning the ball aggressively to take control," said
Japan coach Hiroshi Ohashi. "Our players worked hard in the heat and showed
good tactical understanding and a fighting attitude."
The Japanese team dominated in midfield and kept the visitors in their own
half from the start.
After her teammates hit the woodwork earlier in the game, Sawa struck in the
27th minute off a cross from Shinobu Ohno for the opener, which marked her
50th international goal.
Eight minutes later Nagasato celebrated her first game as a starter by calmly
blasting home an Ohno pass for her first international goal.
After finishing the first half 2-0, Sawa, who has played for her country 93
times, found the net again before Nagasato scored her second goal in the 65th
minute for a 4-0 lead.
"I'm happy with my goal as I wanted to score," said Nagasato. The 17-year-old
said she didn't get nervous in her first starting game. "I missed the target
earlier in the game but I knew I would have more chances."
Substitute midfielder Aya Miyama and defender Akiko Sudo scored one each, in
the 78th and the 88th minutes, respectively.
Sawa said, "We showed the good part of our game." Asked about her 50th goal,
the 26-year-old replied, "That was just a passing mark in my career."
New Zealand coach Mick Leonard said that the game gave his young team good
experience. The Englishman explained his side is in the process of building
up a team for the 2007 World Cup qualifiers.
"We knew it would be a very difficult task (to play Japan), but we needed to
gain experience and it was a very good exercise for us. Japan fully deserved
to a win, but our players gave their best against a superior side."
The Japanese women's team will leave for Moscow on Tuesday, where the Nadeshiko
will meet Russia in a two-game friendly series (May 26 and May 28) as part of
their preparations for the East Asian Championship, slated for early August.
