[聯合會盃] 日本vs墨西哥
JAPAN 1-2 MEXICO
16 June 2005

Mexico came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in Hanover and make a winning
start to their FIFA Confederations Cup campaign. Zinha and Jose Fonseca
were the scorers for Ricardo Lavolpe's side, who had trailing to an early
Atsushi Yanagisawa strike.
A battle royal had been predicted in this opening fixture in Group B and
right from the off it was clear that no-one would be disappointed. Mexico,
true to form, tried to gain the ascendancy by controlling possession, while
the Japanese opted for their fast and direct style of play.
As a consequence, the game ebbed and flowed at a thrilling pace right from
the start. Mexico started in dominant fashion, with Japan content to bide
their time and wait for the precise moment to counter. Mexico came close
came with a Pavel Pardo shot after eight minutes and threatened again soon
afterwards when Carlos Salcido failed to connect cleanly as the ball flew
across goal following a corner.
Then, almost out of thin air, Japan took the lead on 13 minutes. With
remarkable speed, they broke from their own penalty area and had the ball
in the Mexican net after a delightful move. Akira Kaji got on the end of
an inch-perfect through-ball from Mitsuo Ogasawara, who shook off the
attentions of Salcido and crossed perfectly for Yanasigawa to slide the
ball past Oswaldo Sanchez.
Coming out of the blue, the goal momentarily rocked the Mexicans, who lost
some of their earlier precision and control. The Asian champions then
enjoyed their best spell of possession and created several goal-scoring
chances. Instrumental in all of Japan's best moves was Shunsuke Nakamura,
whose trickery had the Aztec defence looking decidedly uncomfortable.
With 28 minutes on the clock, Pardo whipped in a majestic free-kick from
the right edge of the Japanese area. Jared Borgetti rose to meet the ball
perfectly but Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi was equal to it, pulling off a reflex
point-blank save.
The near-miss woke Mexico from their slumber and once again they began to
exert their authority on the game. Winning their share of possession, they
tested the goalkeeper with long-range efforts through Ricardo Osorio and
Pardo, before Zinha tried his luck. Picking up a pass from Salvador Carmona,
the naturalised Brazilian pulled the trigger from 30 yards and watched his
shot fly past the outstretched hand of Kawaguchi into the top right-hand
corner.
The second half began almost as a carbon copy of the first, with Mexico
dominating possession, and Japan waiting for an opportunity to strike a
telling blow. On 47 minutes, Carmona had Mexico's first real chance of the
second half, but he ballooned his shot over the crossbar. El Tricolor
continued pressing, with first Zinha, then Luis Perez, testing the goalkeeper
from distance.
The CONCACAF champions were building up a head of steam and went desperately
close to a second goal on 57 minutes. Some neat interplay between Fonseca
and Zinha saw the latter curl in a wicked cross. Borgetti was first to it,
outjumping Tanaka, but the striker was unlucky to see his effort cannon
back off a post.
Mexico would not be denied a second time however. Shortly after the hour,
Perez took off on a sortie down the left and, after a series of feints,
whipped a measured cross into the Japanese box. As had been the case all
evening, the first head to it was a Mexican one, on this occasion Fonseca’s,
and he flicked a delightful header past Kawaguchi.
The onus was now on the Asian side to chase the game and Lavolpe's men,
while still controlling most of the possession, were happy to fire long
balls up for Borgetti to bring down and work with. Chasing the equaliser
Japan threatened on 79 minutes when Kaji swung in a cross towards Yanasigawa
but the striker just failed to make contact and the ball flew wide.
Japan were now throwing numbers forward in search of an equaliser and
substitute Keiji Tamada did get a late chance, but under pressure dragged
his shot wide of Sanchez's post. The defeat leaves Japan in need of at
least a point in their next game against Greece, while Mexico, deserving
victors, can now look forward to their next challenge against Brazil.
