Date of birth: 7 August 1980 Position: Forward Current Club: JEF United Chiba (JPN) Seiichiro Maki saw off stiff competition to secure one of the squad’s coveted attacking berths at the very last moment. He took up football at primary school but also played ice hockey until he was 16, when he finally decided to concentrate exclusively on the beautiful game. A relative unknown in his country’s footballing circles until the 2001 Universiade Beijing when, as a member of the side representing Japanese universities, he played a large part in his team's victory. After making his J-League debut with JEF United Chiba in 2003, he not only continued to display selfless devotion going forward and tracking back, but also acquired a reputation for being more naturally gifted with his head than with either foot – or "head-footed" as they say in Japanese. At 1.84m he also had a ‘head start’ on his rivals, and in 2005 he made his senior Japan team debut at the East Asian Football Championship. His never-say-die attitude and resolve to score come what may began to get him noticed, even if his appearances for the national team were still limited.
