The measure of the Rockets’ improvement will not come when they play well.

They have shown they can keep it going when the fast break clicks and the
shots fall, as they demonstrated with three consecutive routs that made them
the NBA’s top-scoring team.
火箭已經證明了當他們打的出快攻 & 砍的進三分球時, 他們的火力是聯盟第一讚
The test will come when they miss shots and don’t get the stops to trigger
breaks and push the score well past triple digits.
但只有當火箭手感不佳 & 快攻不順, 得分無法破百時, 這時才能測的出是否真的變強
They know, despite the run of happy routs of the Knicks, 76ers and Grizzlies,
the next week of games will not go so smoothly. Beginning with the Christmas
Day game in Chicago, the Rockets will play four games in five days, facing
the Bulls, Timberwolves, Spurs and Thunder. Only the final game of that
stretch, against Oklahoma City (21-5), will come at home.

“This road trip is key for us,” guard James Harden said. “It will be a
good test having three games on the road against really good teams. In order
for us to make the playoffs, we’re going to have to win some road games, and
this is the time. I think we’re on a roll now as far as us playing together,
so this is going to be big for us.”

Assuming some of that stretch will be difficult, the Rockets said they are
better prepared for what will come than they were a week ago, when they
crumbled.

“If we can go do what we do, yeah, but we’ve got to continue to get stops
and run,” coach Kevin McHale said. “We have to continue to play the same
style. We were able to get out and run, get some good things happening
against Memphis. On the road against Chicago, they’re going to want to slow
us down and get the game a little bit more bogged down. We have to get our
pace.

“Teams get a little more conservative (on the road), but we have to play our
style, which is up-and-down, getting ball movement, body movement, court
space.”

The Rockets have averaged 118 points in the three games since the loss at
Toronto, making 53.6 percent of their shots and averaging 25 fast-break
points per game.

The Bulls rank third in the NBA defensively, allowing 90.33 points per game
on 42.4 percent shooting and 32.6 percent 3-point shooting. They limit pace
and lock down in the halfcourt, especially if teams keep the ball on the
strong side, where Joakim Noah can be disruptive on pick-and-roll coverages
and in the paint.

But the Rockets believe they have grown out of their tendency to hold the
ball when they struggle.

“We’re quicker to see what our issues are,” Lin said. “If we come down on
two straight possessions and no one touches the ball except for the
ballhandler, we’ll be like, ‘OK, we have to call a different set to get the
ball swung from strong to weak, back to strong,’ things like that so the
ball gets moving again. If we get two stagnant possessions, we try not to get
that third one.”

The tests of that await. The Rockets have shown they will stick to what works
but need to demonstrate they will play that style through the stretches it
doesn’t.
