Juventus and Inter were the first pairing to battle it out in tonight's Birra Moretti Trophy at the San Paolo stadium, Naples. Inter opted for a three pronged attack of Cruz, Adriano and Martins, while Deschamps favoured the duo of Bojinov and Zalayeta, and it was the Uruguayan who opened the scoring in the 14th minute; Toldo punched a neat cross from Nedved to the edge of the box, Giannichedda headed the ball back into the danger area, and Zalayeta rose highest to head the bianconeri into the lead (1-0). Inter came close to equalising with Martins heading just wide of Mirante's right post in the 23rd minute. After a brief half-time break, it was Juventus who came out hungriest, Bojinov causing Toldo all sorts of problems with a left-footed thunderbolt from twenty yards out. In the 27th minute, Chiellini latched onto a low Paro cross from the right, but his effort fell safely into Toldo's hands. The game continued with Inter pressing for an opening, but the bianconeri's defence held firm, sealing victory with a determined team performance. Napoli and Inter provided the filling for the evening's sandwich of games, the hosts sneaking a memorable victory with a superbly taken goal from Calaio in the 24th minute. The 1-0 win earned them a shot at the title against the bianconeri in the tournament's third and final tie. Before the teams took to the pitch, the three bianconeri World Cup heroes, Gigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi and Alex Del Piero, were awarded a refreshing prize by the evening's host, Barbara D'Urso, and the actor, Orso Maria Guerrini, the famous “moustache” in the Birra Moretti advertisements. Deschamps made two changes for the tournament decider, bringing on Guzman for Marchionni on the left, and Marchisio for Giannichedda in centre midfield. The bianconeri started brightly, Zalayeta coming close in the 14th minute after a neat one-two with strike partner Valeri Bojinov. Three minutes later, Guzman took the Napoli defence by surprise, volleying Paro's low cross onto the outside of the post. The rebound fell to Bojinov but Gianello stood tall, forcing the Bulgarian to life his deft chip over the bar. Juventus kept pressing for the opener, Guzman coming close twice in the 20th minute - first with a left-footed rocket, then with a glancing header from a Paro corner - but the half finished all square. Juventus brought on Chiumiento for Bojinov in the 32nd minute, looking to break he deadlock, but the Southerners refused to budge. In the 39th minute, the bianconeri managed to carve out an opening, Guzman blazing over the bar after a great passage of play, and Nedved followed suit a minute later, firing just wide from twenty yards out. In the 43rd minute Sculli replaced Zalayeta but the stale mate lasted until the final whistle. The game was decided with a novel take on the traditional penalty shoot-out, players required to round the keeper from 30 yards rather than try their luck from the spot. Davide Chiumiento provided the coup de gras for the bianconeri, securing victory after a hat-trick of Napoli misses.
