Montezemolo: “Things cannot go on like this”
Luca Cordero di Montezemelo has spoken out on the question of
violence in football. In a statement published by the Ansa news agency,
the chairman of FIAT, Ferrari and Confindustria said the following:
“I believe it was absolutely the right decision to call a halt to the
championship. It was just what was needed and the decision has my full
approval, although I do believe there has been too much tolerance, the clubs
can and must do more: they should invest in safety measures as they invest
in players, for the safeguarding of their own fans. It's terrible what's
happening in Italy and it must not be tolerated any longer. Over the last
few years perhaps we've passed too many acts, held too many meetings,
called too many summits. Now is the time for clear and forceful decisions
which will allow families to go and see sport as they do everywhere else
in the world”.
Montezemolo then added: “The system itself needs to be discussed,
we need to work as a team and everyone must play their part.
What happened in Catania is unacceptable, it's the demonstration of
a continuing lack of discipline, values, and healthy competition”.
And finally a comparison between football and another sport which was
in the spotlight this weekend: rugby: “I saw a wonderful atmosphere
at the Italy-France match in Rome on Saturday. Football, on the other hand,
cannot go on like this. It's time for everyone to go back to certain values,
to begin respecting the institutions and the forces of law and
order once more, which represent one of the bulwarks of the country”.
