More importantly, the pressing issue of under what conditions future games are to be played also remains unresolved. At this afternoon's press conference, Didier Deschamps attempted to provide answers to the new set of questions raised by the tragic events of Catania. “The images from Friday night are unacceptable - began the coach – It's the duty of the government and of the clubs to guarantee the safety of those going to the stadium. It's ridiculous that people are risking their lives, be it fans or policemen. Suspending play immediately was the right thing to, not just for the sake of it but to free up the time necessary to make important decisions”. Among the proposals being put forward is the idea to play games behind closed doors in those stadiums which have failed to comply with the directives of the Pisanu bill. That might not affect Turin's Olimpico, but it has certainly caused a stir in the football world. Deschamps holds the following view: “It's horrible playing in an empty stadium. Football is entertainment and it doesn't make any sense without spectators. But if this decision allows stadiums to implement the regulations, we have to accept it. It's a shame to have to penalise those who come to see the games as a reaction to the fringe minorities who use football as an excuse to commit acts of violence. What difference does it make playing behind closed doors? A great deal, especially for the home side. The Bianconeri coach has his own ideas “I would like the stadium to be full every time, with fans cheering on their team instead of hating the opponents. To be able to go there without a police escort, without being insulted and to play in a sporting environment. Unfortunately the word ‘sporting’ is nearly extinct. There are too many excesses, it's like the result is all that matters. This is a good thing, but it also has its negative side and it can lead to excess. All the controversies that happen before and after the game only serve to flare up the situation, to increase the aggression. The players return to work awaiting further developments on when they are likely to play next. Deschamps revealed the atmosphere in the camp:“The team has not lost focus. The players are human beings; they are as shocked as anyone by what has happened and they are more aware than ever that it's up to them to give a good example. Do they want to quit? Not a bit, all the players know they have the best job in the world. Football has given me a great deal, but when you see these things going on, you can't help but reflect on what's happened”.
