Just a draw was needed to see the Primavera through to the quarter-finals at Viareggio but it was never going to be as easy as that. Chiarenza's boys were forced to produce a dogged display to claw their way back from two goals down, qualifying from the group stage and knocking out the defending champions in one fell swoop. A short burst of breathtaking attacking play saw them draw level early in the second half, Sebastian Giovinco adding his name to the score sheet for the third game in succession with a wonderful solo effort, dribbling his way past the Uruguayan defence and rounding the keeper to make it 2-2. Apart from winning the group and qualifying for the next phase of the tournament at Viareggio, a favourable result would go some way towards overturning the disappointment of losing to the Uruguayans in the final last year. Then there were the 40th birthday celebrations of Ciro Ferrara to think about. But most importantly of all, in the stands for the game were the parents of Riccardo Neri. “They came to watch our game – Vincenzo Chiarenza explained after the final whistle – and that's why we want to dedicate this result to both them and the Ferramosca family”.
