http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/sep10x.html Legrottaglie: I am reborn Wednesday 10 September, 2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicola Legrottaglie is back in the Italy jersey and explains why his career has been turned around. “I was too arrogant.” The Juventus defender was an injury doubt with a thigh problem, but played the whole 90 minutes of tonight's 2-0 victory over Georgia. “Tonight we got off to a great start and the first 25 minutes were excellent, pushing forward and leaving Georgia very little space. “Clearly we lost our pace a bit as time wore on and when that happens you are inevitably squeezed back a little bit. We only went close to conceding once, which was mainly down to us being over-eager to get the job done and leaving ourselves unbalanced.” The former Chievo star had vanished from the scene a couple of years ago, but was recalled for the Azzurri after injuries ruled out Giorgio Chiellini, Alessandro Gamberini and Marco Materazzi. “I have always said I go forward on my path and what I do on the pitch speaks for me. I cannot say I deserve a place in the Nazionale and it all depends on my performance and of course what God wants for my life. I accept everything.” Legrottaglie has been very vocal on the difference made to his life and career by becoming a born-again Christian. “My life was changed and I was reborn as a man with my religion, so with that your everyday life and work is transformed. I had lost my humility when I first joined Juventus, I was too arrogant, so I regained my humility and those knocks were what I needed to get me back on track.” He was chosen ahead of the younger Andrea Barzagli for this match and some have questioned the use of veterans such as Fabio Cannavaro and Legrottaglie in central defence. “I've never been in such good physical and psychological shape, not even when I was 20. If a player is good, then it doesn't matter how old he is. Just look at Cannavaro! “You need to win now, not in 10 years, so the Nazionale should pick the players in the best current shape.” Like Daniele De Rossi, Legrottaglie also commented on the tiring schedule that throws the Italian players straight into international duty after just one Serie A round. “Today we have already played 20 official games between Serie A, the Champions League and friendlies.
