Primavera clinch fourth Coppa Italia triumph!
April 16, 2013
A magnificent extra-time Federico Mattiello strike settled a dramatic
two-legged showdown with Napoli to seal the Primavera’s fourth Coppa
Italia triumph.
Napoli
Having edged ahead on aggregate through Stefano Padovan’s 56th minute
penalty, Marco Baroni’s side were forced to play an additional 30 minutes
after Soma Novothny rose highest in the area to bring the scores level in
the dying stages of normal time.
But a sensational extra-time solo effort from Mattiello broke Napoli
hearts to seal an unforgettable victory in the cauldron of the San Paolo.
Juventus Primavera

The visitors, requiring at least a goal to keep their trophy hopes alive,
started the brighter of the two sides and could have gone in front as
early as the second minute.
Hordur Magnusson’s dangerous swerving free-kick was pushed clear by
Diamante Crispino, with Joel Untersee unable to sweep the loose ball home
amid a pack of defenders.
The Bianconeri enjoyed the lion’s share of possession during a combative
first half but were unable to penetrate a disciplined Napoli rearguard
determined to protect their away goal gained at Juventus Stadium.
On 20 minutes, Elvis Kabashi almost caught Crispino cold with a rasping
drive from outside the area, only for the goalkeeper to prove equal to the
task by tipping the ball over the bar.
Moments later, Stefano Beltrame found himself in behind the hosts’
defence but was eventually crowded out by a combination of the pursuing
Igor Lasicki and Crispino’s spirited dart off his line.
With five minutes remaining ahead of the interval, Magnusson again had the
opportunity to test the goalkeeper from a dead ball situation. This time,
however, the Icelandic defender was unable to direct his attempt on
target, seeing his fiercely struck shot drop just wide of the upright.
Juventus emerged for the second half with increased vigor and went a
whisker away from taking the lead when first Beltrame and then Magnusson
were denied in quick succession by last-ditch blocks in the Partenopei
area.
But an increased period of pressure paid off when Beltrame’s spirited
burst into the box was brought to a halt by Daniele Celiento’s cynical
challenge from behind on 56 minutes.
Stefano Padovan stepped up to calmly send Crispino the wrong way from the
spot as the Primavera took a giant stride towards lifting their first
silverware of the season.
The breakthrough forced Napoli to throw bodies forward in their attempts
to find a way back into the affair. And their determined assault reaped
rewards when Soma Novothny met Roberto Insigne’s left-wing cross to plant
a close-range header past Laurentiu Branescu with just four minutes
remaining.
With extra-time looming Juventus almost produced a last-gasp winner when
late substitute Vajebah Sakor rattled the crossbar with a scintillating
drive from range that left Crispino rooted to the spot.
A tentative first half of extra-time then ensued in which Federico
Mattiello tried to catch Crispino off guard with a low attempt drilled
towards the near post that was comfortably gathered by the Partenopei
custodian.
But the midfielder soon atoned for his earlier miss by embarking on a mazy
run into the box and unleashing a left-footed strike which nestled in the
far corner to clinch Juventus a memorable success.
