KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT JOHN SALMONS
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. □ The Sacramento Kings today signed free agent guard
John Salmons to a multi-year contract, it was announced by Kings’ President
of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Per club policy, financial terms
of the agreement were not disclosed.
“We’re excited to add a versatile player like John to our team,” said
Petrie. “He can play three positions. We feel he’s still an emerging player
in the NBA. He’ll add to the youth and overall skill level of our backcourt
, and I’m really looking forward to watching him play for the Kings.”
Salmons, a four-year NBA veteran, averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2
.7 assists in 25.1 minutes per game last season for Philadelphia through
82 games, of which he started 24. He shot .420 percent from the field and
.775 percent from the free-throw line.
Selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round (26th overall) of the
2002 NBA Draft, Salmons was acquired by the Sixers in a draft-night trade
with the Spurs with Mark Bryant and the draft rights to Randy Holcomb for
Speedy Claxton (6/26/02).
The 6-7, 207-pound guard has averaged 5.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists
in 281 career games with Philadelphia, while shooting .406 percent from
the field and .765 percent from the free-throw line. Salmons has posted four
double-doubles for his career, two points-assists and two points-rebounds
. He has scored 20 points or more three times, including a career-high 23
points versus Toronto (3/17/06). Salmons was named Most Outstanding Player
of the 2003 Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston. He has appeared in eight
games in two trips to the playoffs.
Salmons set career-highs last season (2005-06) in games played, games started
, field goals made and attempted, free-throws made and attempted, free-throw
percentage, offensive, defensive and total rebounds, assists, steals, points
and scoring average.
Salmons enjoyed a stellar career at the University of Miami, where he started
107-straight games, the second-highest streak in school history. He tied
teammate Elton Tyler for most games played in school history (124) and ranked
third in career assists (433) and steals (192), and 13th in scoring (1,287
). Salmons is the only player in Hurricane history to record at least 50
steals in three consecutive seasons (1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02). He was honored
with the Big East Sportsmanship Award as a senior.
