All hope is not lost.
If the Sacramento Kings can muster the juevos to pick fourth best in the
upcoming NBA draft and not trade away a great opportunity, they will turn the
tide on this turd.
Because we all know, things can only get better.
The next few days are pivotal for Geoff Petrie. First, he needs to get back
from Spain. The Ricky Rubio hype doesn’t look like it’s going to work out
as Rubio is projected to be either the second or third pick in the draft.
Flush that dream down the toilet.
Second, he needs to put a sweet offer on Kurt Rambis or Tom Thibodeau now.
Quit the lollygagging. This coach courting process is an impediment to the
eventual draft-day decision-making process. Why make things more complicated
than they need to be?
Finally, identify and compromise on the last few fleeting stars of the draft.
While it has been noted that this is a weaker class than in offseasons past —
that’s been noted for the past six years. Particularly 2006, which has
produced viable players in LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay and Rajon
Rondo. Note the All-Stars in that list. Now take note that in the last 10
years the No. 4 pick has been pretty darn good. In fact, a number have been
named to the All-Star team at one point or another (Chris Paul, Chris Bosh,
Lamar Odom and Drew Gooden).
Those two facts should give Kings fans hope for what’s coming next: A really
good point guard.
More than likely available, and more than likely an improvement, both Jrue
Holiday (UCLA) and Ty Lawson (North Carolina) will be around for Sacramento
to pick up a big-time player.
This makes me happy.
Not to mention Stephen Curry (Davidson) and Italian phenom Brandon Jennings,
the Kings can address their worst represented position.
What else did you think Petrie was in Spain for?
Every offseason’s pinnacle is the draft. But every good GM knows that you
have to put in work in free agency as well to help spur your club along.
Think Boston Celtics, à la 2008, in which the team picked up Ray Allen and
Kevin Garnett. Think 1996 L.A. Lakers, with the arrival of Shaquille O’Neal.
Think 2004 Golden State Warriors with arrival of Baron Davis. Those are
season-changing moves. Franchise-changing moves. The Kings are one step away
from that.
With this year’s draft in tow, a new point guard to stabilize the offense
and the maturation of forward Jason Thompson and center Spencer Hawes, the
team will be more than competitive. It’ll be exciting.
Let’s just not scream about the sky falling for not getting to pick first.
There will be other Blake Griffins to choose from.
