Despite inking Kevin Martin for the foreseeable future and getting another high draft pick with Jason Thompson, the Kings were on the wrong side of the boxscore more often than not in 2008-09. Injuries were a major factor - Martin appeared in just 51 games, while Francisco Garcia saw just 65 - and the team's faith in Beno Udrih turned out to be misplaced, so with a completely dysfunctional backcourt in play it was hard for the Kings to compete. One positive for much of the season was the phenomenal play of John Salmons, who put up a career-high 18.3 points per game. The good news for the Kings is that the 2009 NBA Draft is full of solid young point guards. It looks like the Kings could have their pick of the crop despite dropping to fourth in the draft order. The LA Clippers will certainly take Blake Griffin with the first overall pick, the Memphis Grizzlies are likely to go with either size - Hasheem Thabeet - or an off guard in James Harden. The rumor is that Sam Presti is leading towards taking Ricky Rubio and moving Russell Westbrook to the two, meaning Rubio would be off the board before the Kings got their crack. If he is, expect the Kings to think long and hard about drafting Jrue Holiday. If the Thunder don't go Rubio, he could very well land in Sacramento. An ideal fit might be someone like Antonio McDyess, but the challenge there is convincing McDyess that it's worth his while to join the cause. Plenty of teams will be courting him this summer - teams with championship aspirations. It's more likely the Kings wind up with someone like Anthony Johnson, who will be out if the Orlando Magic opt to keep Rafer Alston, or Wally Szczerbiak, who may not have much left in his tank. They could even conceivably get Mikki Moore back. None of those players get the Kings to the next level, but the guys who could get them to the next level won't want to be a part of a young and struggling franchise in a dreadfully small market. Next, the Kings need to make some tough choices about Cedric Simmons, Bobby Jackson, and Will Solomon. Jackson's best days are far behind him, and Simmons has been completely ineffective. Can he prove to be a go-to guy in the clutch? Will Solomon prove he belongs in the NBA?
