Long after the balls stopped bouncing inside the Kings' practice facility
Tuesday, the competitive juices were still flowing.
They overflowed, in fact, into the digital realm.
While Sean May and his veteran-laden team may have lost four out of seven
scrimmages to the team's young guns during what could be dubbed pre-training
camp, he wasn't about to let second-year player Donté Greene get away with
trash talking.
Especially since it was on Twitter for all to see.
"Just finish kill'n the vets. Me and (Jason Thompson) and the rooks … "
Greene wrote in his corner of the public forum.
Six minutes later, May responded on his page.
"Killin? Really. Y'all won the series … but no killin was going down."
If anything can be determined about this Kings team before training camp
begins, it's that it should be spirited. That was clear long before the
players engaged in high-tech chest puffs, as 11 of the team's 14 players were
on hand for voluntary workouts. The venue aside, there was no reason to think
it wasn't a regular-season game in mid-December.
Training camp starts next Tuesday, but you couldn't tell from the intensity
level.
Rookie Omri Casspi sparked the first Spencer Hawes temper tantrum of the new
season, pestering him just enough to force a turnover and a thunderous wall
slap from the third-year center.
Jason Thompson took a pass from rookie Tyreke Evans and ripped through
traffic for a right-handed dunk on the break, then scowled as if he had
posterized Kevin Garnett.
May showed off his improved shooting range with what he thought was a
three-pointer, then argued vehemently when Casspi took it upon himself to
rule it a two.
There were rough spots, to be sure. While Evans continued to penetrate the
lane at will as he did in the July summer league, his jumper will need to
improve, or opposing defenses will play off of him. The frontline will be a
major focus, but the question of whether some mixture of Thompson, Hawes,
May, Kenny Thomas and Jon Brockman can survive down low won't be answered in
this setting.
But with little yet to gauge but mood and mind-set, the Kings are encouraged
by the early vibe.
"With guys having been here already for two and three weeks, I think that
already demonstrates a different attitude, a different level of dedication
and focus for the upcoming year," said Hawes, who was on May's team. "I think
it's already starting (to change) that culture and that perception around the
league of what this franchise is going to stand for …
"It doesn't happen overnight, but we've got a lot of young pieces especially
that we know we can build around."
Beno Udrih, Andres Nocioni and newly signed Desmond Mason have yet to arrive
in Sacramento, and shooting guard Kevin Martin was present but did not
participate. The team's front-office team of Geoff Petrie, Wayne Cooper and
Jason Levien watched.
First-year Kings coach Paul Westphal and his staff looked on, unable to take
part because of league rules but surely allowed to continue evaluating.
"They were competing," Westphal said. "A lot of hard fouls. It was nice to
see the guys running up and down. It's pretty apparent that guys have been
playing basketball and are in pretty good shape. We're just ready for the
next step.
"The days of training camp being used to sweat five or 10 pounds off of
players and ease them into things, those days are over. These guys realize
that, and I think they'll come in ready."
Sergio Rodríguez looked game-ready and capable of pushing for minutes at
point guard, even if he ran the floor for the losing team. Having been traded
to the Kings from Portland on draft night in June, the fourth-year player
compared his new atmosphere to that of the Blazers in recent years.
"It's a young team. We're trying to win every game and hassle teams. It's a
great situation," he said. "We have to enjoy it. That's the most important
thing. Everything else will come. If we enjoy and play hard, everything else
will come."
If May's Tweets about the day's games were any indication, they're doing that
so far.
"A lot of cats are back and looking good!" he wrote. "(Going to be) a fun
year for Kings basketball."
