Yet, as he began the interview process with general managers and team personnel at the NBA draft combine, Cousins – who turns 20 in August – came in expecting to be questioned about his maturity and conditioning. His confidence hasn't wavered amid the scrutiny. There are first-round mock drafts that have Cousins slipping as low as fifth to Sacramento, where he would seem to be a natural fit for the Kings. He has size (6-foot-11, 290 pounds) and a fiery demeanor on the court. Cousins was productive in his one year of college, averaging 15.1 points and 9.8 rebounds. There were no embarrassing off-court incidents at Kentucky, but there were heated exchanges with Wildcats coach John Calipari during games. Cousins claims Calipari welcomed player feedback. Cousins admits he's "still a work in progress," but he's not the problem player he's been made out to be in media reports. "I'm not going to be out there with a smile, all happy," Cousins said. Cousins improved considerably in that area during the season, his former teammate said. "When he stepped on the court, teams would do whatever they could to get in his head, rattle him, frustrate him and see how he'd react," Patterson said. "And if you watched the games toward the end of the year, you see him getting battered and hit all the time. His body fat also is down, thanks in part to training and a seafood-and-salad diet. "Playing for (coach) Cal, your work ethic is going to change because you're going to come in and work," Cousins said. Cousins, however, had no problem knowing he'd be answering similar questions about his "red flags" from teams Thursday and today.
