消息來源: http://www.nypost.com/sports/knicks/29834.htm JAMAL IS A HAPPY CAMPER By MARC BERMAN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email Archives Print Reprint October 7, 2004 -- CHARLESTON — He hails from Seattle, has yet to make his Knicks debut, but already Jamal Crawford feels as if he's found his permanent basketball home. "I want to spend the rest of my career here," Crawford told The Post. "The first time I came to New York [after the trade], I couldn't believe it. It's almost too perfect." Life feels sweeter than the tea served in this deep-South seaport city for Crawford, a walking, talking Knick infomercial. Of course that could change when the former Bulls combo guard shoots 2 of 12 and hears his first Garden jeers. But for now, Crawford sounds like the luckiest guy in the world. "It felt good to be wanted," said Crawford, who inked a seven-year, $56 million package as part of August's sign-and-trade. "How do you turn Isiah Thomas down? You got a winning team. It's a perfect fit, a team you know is going to be in the playoffs and can advance deep. Why wouldn't you want to be a part of it, to play with Steph [Marbury], Allan [Houston], to have a Hall of Fame coach, Hall of Fame president, first-class organization. It was a no-brainer." Lenny Wilkens' presence was no small factor in Crawford's comfort level. Wilkens, who still maintains a home in Seattle and coached the Sonics to a world championship, used to watch Crawford play at Seattle's Rainier Beach High. "He's a legend in Seattle," Crawford said of Wilkens. "He coached a team that won a championship and he saw me play. He's a legend and I'm a high-school kid. We got a chance to know each other." "I thought he had a chance to be a good player," Wilkens recalls. "He was very receptive to coaching. I saw he picked things up quickly." In his first Knick scrimmage Tuesday night, Crawford played both shooting guard and point, showing the flair backcourtmate Stephon Marbury has talked about. "I love the offense," Crawford said. "There's so many different options. It keeps the ball moving, keeps everybody involved." Marbury and Crawford are the Knicks' starting backcourt, at least until Allan Houston returns. When he does, there'll be a minutes crunch. Marbury has stepped forward to say he's willing to take less than his usual 40. "Whatever it takes for us to win," Marbury said. "I don't like being on the bench, but I don't like losing. If it takes me being on the bench more, to win more games, that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make."
