Kurt Adds Captain Role to Knicks

GREENBURGH, NY, Oct 13, 2004 -- What have the Knicks learned about themselves
during their eight-day training camp at the College of Charleston?
i can’t believe how deep we are,” small forward Tim Thomas, sipping Gatorade,
shakes his head in wonderment after the team’s hard-hitting practice at the
MSG Training Center. “It’s really amazing how much talent we have. First
one guy gets hot for two or three minutes carrying the team, then another guy
catches fire for two or three minutes. You take people out,thereꄠs no letdown.
And we no longer need to save our energies by playing slow; we're getting up
and down in transition at full speed."
This all-essential “deep depth” has been realized through every possible means
: making a big off-season trade (Jamal Crawford and Jerome Williams),
discovering a profound sleeper in last June’s NBA Draft (43d pick Trevor
Ariza),and the innate development of a gifted young player (second-year power
forward Michael Sweetney). “Of course, we knew Jamal was talented,”
point guard Stephon Marbury said. “But I’m not sure we knew how REALLY
talented he was. And Ariza has pretty much shocked all of us with his
basketball instincts and maturity.” Sweetney? “He’s been just awesome,
very powerful,” said Marbury. “Sweet is beginning to prove that he can be
‘The Guy’, that truly dominating presence we need so much in the low post.”
Crawford, filling an enormous role during the recovering Allan Houston absence,
adds several dimensions all by himself. “He makes us so much more versatile
and dangerous,” said Marbury. “It doesn’t matter which one of us handles
the ball, we both play the same way. Our offense is interchangeable.
And Jamal’s such a slasher, now you have two guys who can penetrate the
defense, one on either side of the court.”
“With Tim (Thomas), who can also create for others, it’s almost like we have
a triangle,” added Crawford. “With TWO slashers getting into the seams and
kicking the ball out, we create easier shots for Tim, Penny (Hardaway), Kurt
(Thomas), Nazr (Mohammed). Really, it helps all the other guys.”
Of course basketball, the most chemical game of all, is all about helping the
other guys – could this have been the main reason behind Kurt Thomas being
made the Knicks tri-captain before today’s practice? “Absolutely – I’ve
always really liked Kurt’s attitude, the way he walked out on the court and
took charge,” Coach Lenny Wilkens said. “He’s been the guy who calls out
the defenses and tells everyone where to go on the court. Now his captaincy
will give him even more responsibility as far as providing leadership vocally.”
“We’ve had two captains, Allan and Stephon, both guards,”
added Wilkens. “I wanted another leader in the front-court.” Thomas,
who is as much a prince of a guy off the court as he’s an ornery fighter on
it, has been a Knick for six years, averaging a double-double during the
team’s last two playoff runs. “Becoming the Knicks captain is something
I’ve always dreamed about,” he said. “Now it’s a dream come true.” But
what will he do differently as captain? “Well, for one thing I’m going to
try to stay out on the court more,” smiled Thomas. “I’ve found out that
it’s impossible to lead while sitting on the bench. So I’m going to try not
to get as many technicals.”

當記者問K.Thomas這樣是不是代表被交易的機會減少?
K.Thomas回答:"我沒甚麼意見啦!Patrick Ewing被交易的時候也是隊長阿!"
